Guard Injured

IRVING, Texas – The season didn't end the way the Cowboys would've hoped, and for one player the offseason is already off to a rough start.

Right guard Kyle Kosier is believed to have suffered a torn MCL midway through the third quarter. He is expected to undergo further tests, but would likely require surgery to repair the knee, and could miss most, if not all, of the team's offseason program. His availability for the start of training camp in July would also be in some jeopardy.

Against the Giants, Kosier was replaced by rookie undrafted free agent Kevin Kowalski, whose first play was the Cowboys' first touchdown, a 34-yard pass from Tony Romo to Laurent Robinson. Kosier was injured on the previous play, a three-yard Sammy Morris run.

The Cowboys were already without their top left guard, Montrae Holland, who tore his biceps against Philadelphia in Week 16. Veteran Derrick Dockery filled in on the left side.

Kosier had been the Cowboys' starting left guard for his first five seasons with the team, but moved to the right side this year to ease communication for rookie first-round tackle Tyron Smith. He started every game this season, but was bothered by plantar fasciitis in his foot for most of the year, sitting out Wednesday practice each week to rest.

Sunday's injury, the most serious of his career, may put Kosier's future with the Cowboys in doubt. Now 33, Kosier has dealt with his share of pain before. He missed three games in 2010 with knee and ankle injuries, and in 2008 was placed on the injured reserve following only three appearances due to a broken foot.

Kosier signed a new three-year contract with the Cowboys last summer, following a brief time as an unrestricted free agent. The deal expires after the 2013 season.

So a new center and 2 new guards it is. Gonna be tough to add 3 OL and 6 new defensive starters in one off-season.

Yeah. I would say he's done. I'd love to draft Wisconsin's interior line. At least draft Konz.

Kind of a blessing.

He's washed up and was only decent to begin with.

This was God forcing Jerry's hand. He's sick of this shit too.

Have to correct what I wrote on Kosier. His torn MCL will NOT require surgery & shouldn't threaten availability for camp. I regret the error

I honestly don't mind Kosier IF we upgrade at Center and the other Guard spot.

I'm not sold with Doug Free at LT either. If we don't draft another we need to slide Doug over to RT, and start Tyron at LT.

He was the only lineman worthy of any praise this year.

I'd love for the new O Line coach and Jason to make that call. I don't want it to be Jerry's call. Most teams besides us have 2 good edge rushers so it kind of doesn't matter. Free just needs a coach who can get him to play batter. Tony Sparano is the obvious choice but Bruce Matthews would work too.

As bad as he is, he is twice the player Costa and Nagy are.

I wouldn't go that far, Nagy at least has some upside, Kosier was just awful and he should pretty much be done. If you can't diagnose a simple stunt and make the correct block anymore, you need to go. Buh bye.

I wouldn't mind Ricky Wagner in the 2nd or 3rd round, but I know this team won't draft a tackle in the early rounds this year.

I'd move Free to RT, draft this kid and let them fight it out in camp. 6'6 320 lbs. a road grader. I know we have more pressing needs in the interior line, but hey. Doug Free has been a mess this year.
