Following the 2011 NFL draft, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper gave the Cowboys a B- grade for what the franchise did with their eight picks.

With the regular season complete, Kiper recently re-graded each team, judging each by how their picks performed during their rookie season.

For the Cowboys, Kiper changed his grade to a C+ despite a solid season from right tackle Tyron Smith and running back DeMarco Murray.

“I said then that I liked the conviction Dallas had to get younger on the offensive line, stay at No. 9 and take Tyron Smith, even though that was no home run in terms of value,” Kiper wrote. “Still, that pick turned into a win for the Cowboys. Smith, who started all season as a 20-year-old, played on the right side, but all indications are he could develop into a blindside tackle if they find it necessary to move him there. The grade rises if he can.

“Right now, a right tackle isn't your goal with a lineman taken at No. 9 overall. Bruce Carter's NFL script is still unwritten, but DeMarco Murray obviously was a great value in the third before he went down for the year. Murray's injury, incidentally, is why it's hard to ever say a great running back out of the third round is a "steal" -- RBs land in the third because you expect them to get hurt. It's just reality. There isn't much else here so far. Dwayne Harris flashed in the preseason but wasn't a factor. Aside from Smith, the best rookie was kicker Dan Bailey, but alas, he wasn't drafted and can't be factored in here.”

Here are the Cowboys' picks and how they performed:

First round, 9th overall: Tyron Smith. Started all 16 games at right tackle.

Second round, 40th overall: Bruce Carter. Played in 10 games, mostly on special teams.

Third round, 71st overall: DeMarco Murray. Ran for 897 yards before having season ended due to injury.

Fourth round, 110th overall: David Arkin. Was never active but is considered to have a future at guard.

Fifth round, 143rd overall: Josh Thomas . Cut by the Cowboys and signed by the Carolina Panthers.

Sixth round, 176th overall: Dwayne Harris. Averaged 28.9 yards per kickoff return, played in 7 games.

Seventh round, 220th overall: Shaun Chapas. Played in three games, catching one pass for nine yards.

Seventh round, 252nd overall: Bill Nagy. Started season opener but had year ended by broken ankle.

I have us at a C- - up from a D because of Murray .

He's right theres not much for the great Tom Ciskowski to show here .

I think it's still too early to judge. This draft has been better than the ones in the past.

Take 09' for instance.

Dumb. I always believed you grade a draft in 5 years.

We could potentially have 4 all pro's in the 2011 draft by that time. Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter, Demarco Murray, Dan Bailey.

Not to mention maybe a solid starter in Arkin. Let's calm the fuck down Kiper.

Did you see Ratliff?

Bruce Carter could be a bust but let's not grade until there's enough proof.

I'd rate us higher than C+. Tyron Smith has a chance to be an All Pro LT for years...I'd argue that there is not another T in the league that I would take over him in terms of talent not, plus what he can become. To get a franchise LT, that alone makes this draft better than a C+. Chapas and Harris both have a future with the team...and both were solid value where we took them. For a throwaway pick Nagy was a solid selection. Signing Bailey was money too...should be set there for years. How this draft can really become an A is what Carter and Arkin do. If they can be longterm starters this is a great draft, but right now I am happy with this draft.

We had too many solid contributors in year one to only warrant a C+.

Especially when two of them played exceptionally well.

Tyron, Murray, Bailey and even Carter later in the year when he healed were all SOLID contributors. How on Earth was this not an A to A+ draft? And too use injuries against us on whether someone was a bust or not this year is incredulous.

Bailey isn't included because he wasn't drafted. I wouldn't call Carter a solid contributor, since he barely played on D and didn't really make any plays when he did get in.

Still alot of potential for this draft to look much better in a few years though. The C+ grade doesn't reflect that potential.. and i think just based on contributions this season alone, it should have been B- to B.

He played on ST and made some big tackles on that Unit. No one was expecting him to even play, much less contribute this year and he did solid to me. I hope he's just like Lee in that he just assplodes next year.

I don't doubt Carter will wind up starting at some point next year.. i don't think it'll be right away though. He's certainly behind the ball compared to Lee, who got meaningful defensive snaps his first year and made some big plays for us.
