Anyone have any thoughts?

I am going to buy one for my wife but have never used one and I am looking for some opinions.

It seems the new nook HD is going to be very good but the kindle fire has more books and apps?

Even though about 150 more should I just go with an ipad 2? I have never read any books with mine so cant really compare them?

The kindle fire seems like the way to go..appreciate any opinions.

I bought my wife a kindle fire a while back. She loves it.

I can't say how it compares to the other brands.

I can only tell you that it has been great for what she uses it for. She downloads books(rent or buy), apps, watches Netflix, browse the Internet. I'm sure there's other shit it does, but I don't know what.

Battery life is great too.

I read good things about the Nook (doesn't it handle PDFs better or easier?) but I wonder if there aren't a lot of ebooks on Amazon that B&N doesn't have. They'll both have all the bestsellers, but I can't imagine B&N has as many of the less popular books.

The biggest thing that's stopped me from buying an ipad is I would have to get a data plan through one of AT&T or Verizon, etc. How does the Kindle work as far as that goes? Is it strictly wifi?

We use wifi for the kindle.

Thats a good point about the data plan for the iPad. Kindle doesn't require anything like that.

So then you can only use the kindle for browsing and downloading when you have a wifi signal?

I would think if you just want to read books or use it on your home wifi the kindle would be better. iPad would be better for work and if you need it on the road or plane, i.e. when you don't have wifi but have 3G/4G access.

One of the new Fire models has built in 4g and you can get a ridiculously inexpensive data plan to go with it, but it's got a very low data cap to go along with it. I'd use it to download book purchases/borrows, but not much else. Can't remember the exact specs, but it's something on the order of $50 a year for 50mb a month.

I bought my son an OG Fire and he loves it. Amazon has built a very, very nice ecosystem with value-added perks everywhere you look. Their Prime movies, for example allowed me to dump Netflix and the "lending library" is tits if you read a lot...or a little. I can't say enough good things about Amazon.

His Fire, unfortunately only lasts an hour per charge (with wifi off). We bought it for Christmas last year,so in 9 months, the battery is nearly useless. I'm typing on a Xoom I got 2 years ago, and I can surf nonstop for 2 days without needing a charge so the Fire is disappointing, for sure. My understanding is that the new generation's batteries are far superior, so we may get him another one this Christmas. I may grab one for myself, as well.
