IRVING, Texas -- Phil Costa did not take part in Tuesday’s walkthrough practice at Valley Ranch because of a concussion suffered Sunday against the New York Giants.
While owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed optimism that Costa would be able to play Saturday at Tampa Bay, the second-year center must pass a series of mandated tests before being allowed to even practice.
If he can’t play, undrafted rookie Kevin Kowalski would start.
Kowalski fared well after replacing Costa against the Giants. He also saw time as an injury replacement at guard and center against San Francisco and New England.
“I just have to be prepared either way and be ready to go,” Kowalski said. “That’s my role, and that’s what I have to do.”
Kowalski’s first start of the preseason came out of the blue, when management decidedAndre Gurode would not play against Minnesota, and Kowalski secured a roster spot with his performance.
“You try to stay consistent with your mindset,” Kowalski said.
