Dallas Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking was interviewed on KESN-FM 103.3 on Monday (5/16) to discuss the NFL lockout and the workouts they have organized on their own. Here are some highlights:
Q.) Did you get information from Rob Ryan during the window and get more information as to what he wanted to accomplish during these OTAs?
I got our playbook way back, and looking through it, it's a complex system. There's a lot of stuff, but I've been around long enough to where looking over it the past couple of months, I'm very familiar with what we're doing. Bradie [James] and I, we're able to go out there and run our defense, get guys going in the right direction. We're very comfortable with the system right now.
It's a very complex system, and we have a wide arrange of fronts and coverages. We're a 3-4 right now, but a 4-3 in some situations. It's kind of a hybrid-type defense, 3-4, 4-3. One of the things I love in meeting with him in the brief time I did, he's obviously been watching us on film. Once we do get to work, which I hope is soon, he's going to become more familiar with us. Depending upon once he gets to know us and our strengths, he's going to put us in positions and we're going to run what he thinks we're best at.
We're working on everything right now in these practices. Going to get a good little base under us, so when we do get into training camp, or hopefully we have some OTAs with our coaches. We're going to all be the better for it, based on what we are doing right now.
Q.) A few weeks ago, you were defending the off-season adventures of Dez Bryant. Explain yourself on that.
I don't recall that interview. I don't do any others than with you (laughing).
I wouldn't say I necessarily defend. First of all, I've seen Dez on a very limited basis this offseason, in these practices the past two weeks. I haven't talked to Dez specifically on what took place this offseason. I wouldn't defend him on anything or make any comments too specific on what's taken place because I don't know. I would be assuming a lot of stuff. I don't tend to do that. So I don't know what you are talking about.
Q.)Is it too pessimistic to say it'll be August before we know if this lockout is going to continue or end?
It's hard for me to put a time frame on it. My hope is that this week, obviously with this stay, it gives the owners a little more leverage. I think the only way this thing can get worked out is if we get back to the negotiating table. The longer to court systems tend to drag this thing out, and there's no pressure put on one side, the owners or the players, the picture gets a little more dim.
I hope and pray that we get back to the table and negotiate seriously. At the end of the day, that's the only way this thing is going to get worked. And hopefully that's sooner than later.
The thing I like is we're preparing. Obviously, it would be much better if we had our coaches out there in OTA settings and everybody was there, that would be much better for all of us. I promise you, regardless, there's going to be no excuses with us. There's about six to eight of us that are making dang sure of that. We're going to be prepared as we possibly can be when the season does start and we get with our coaches. There's no excuses for us. Our fans can hang their hat on that.
