Supposedly we were looking into restructing the contracts of Romo, Austin and Ware, and maybe even Newman's.

If any of those guys restructure they have to sit out until August 4th, just like a new free agent signing. (note, Garrett says that date might be moved up based on what happens with recertification etc etc) but for now, its 8-4. Garrett doesnt want those guys missing practice, so their deals have not been restructured yet.

Any free agent you sign, whether its yours or someone else's also cannot practice until 8-4. So not only do you not have these guys available, the guys who free up the cap room via new deals (above) are not available either.

That said, there's nothing that would preclude the team from negotiating with players they want and maybe even coming to a verbal agreement, but not officially signing until 8-4 (unless as Garrett aluded to today, that date is moved up). With a condensed training camp, this makes sense for a team that 1) Wants to get the work in for their players and 2) Might be up against the cap.

Now someone might say what about the NA thing, how could they have done that without anyone restructuring. And the answer to me is obvious, Newman probably would have been traded or released if NA had agreed to terms.

So just because we havent went on an elaborate shopping spree doesnt mean nothings in the works, or that nothing is going to change.

I don't buy that theory. If there were people we were in love with, I think we'd be aggressive in signing them. You don't sit on your hands and risk your targets being signed by other teams.

I think we're just being responsible. There's 600+ free agents out there. The majority of the deals I've seen have made me cringe a little.

What I'm saying is maybe they have deals lined up with those people, but wont officially sign them until 8-4. It doesnt make any difference if we sign them today or not, they still cant practice.

And if they have to restructure deals to officially sign those guys, the people who restructure have to sit out as well until 8-4.

Would never happen. Verbal agreements aren't worth a shat.

If you have a player you want, and you agree to terms, you'd sign him right away. Their agent, if their fulfilling their fiduciary responsibilities, would continue to shop their services.

You dont know this for certain in all cases. Certainly it leaves open the opportunity, but if the agent gets the player a deal they are happy with, and its with the team he wants to play for its unlikely they'd then reneg and go sign elsewhere over waiting a few days to officially sign.

Okay. If you want to believe that this is whats going on, then so be it.

I can tell you that, under no uncertain terms, it's not the case. Not a chance.

When two parties come to an agreement, you ratify the contact by putting it on paper and having all parties sign.

No player is going to take himself off the market because team A made a promise to sign him. No team is going to accept the promise of a player to sign, when you know their agent is going to continue to market said player in search of a better deal.

Right... because it was an even playing field. No teams could sign anyone until Friday.

That's a different situation altogether than what you're suggesting. You're suggesting teams can sign free agents, but we've got guys willing to not sign with other teams because of a pinky-swear deal with the Cowboys.

It's so ridiculous, it's not even worth seriously considering.
