Another week, another high-profile player who entered the league in 2010 and had a big second season and fell off in 2012 needs back surgery.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is undergoing back surgery today in California. The procedure is being performed by Dr. Robert Watkins, the same doctor who’ll operate later this month on Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Pierre-Paul is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. It’s unclear how long before Week One he’ll be cleared to practice and play.

The first-round pick played with the back injury in 2012, and he had multiple epidural injections to get through the season. He’s expected to be fully recovered after the surgery.

JPP will be back I bet. Our luck isn't that good. But he could be rusty and/or not 100% conditioned.

The Giants have some new pieces along their DL. Cullen Jenkins. Jonathan Hankins (R). Damontre Moore (R).

Should be interesting.

@AdamSchefter 3m Giants announced JPP underwent back surgery this morning and recovery time expected to be 12 weeks. Do the math...

12 weeks away is 8/27

So he ought to be active for week 1

He won't be 100% Week 1 and his back may never be 100% again either.

See what happens when you piss off Doug Free?

Free's dominant play on JPP last yr ruined his back.

That would be ideal. Unfortunately I think the doc said he'll make a 100% recovery.

Still... backs and necks... injure them once and they're never really the same.

I'm the kind of guy that openly roots for injuries to rivals. JPP looked like an up and coming dominant player. I wouldnt' shed a tear if he needed a back brace and walking sticks the rest of his life.

Exactly. Of course the doc is gonna say that, but I've never seen anyone come back 100% from back surgery.

Troy overcame his herniated disc in 1993, but it essentially ruined Haley's and Novacek's career.

Once you get back surgery, it's pretty much down hill from there on. Meaning that you don't just end up having one back surgery; there will be more for JPP in the future.

Having back surgery that early in life is not a good thing.

I'm pretty sure Free has wheels on his shoes. A quadrapalegic in a motorized wheelchair could push him back.

He told me that he is going to pretend he didn't see you say this.

You don't want Free angry.

If he reverts back to his second year when he was mauling people at RT then no, I don't.

Now, I'd just let Timmy kick his ass.
