Still Looking?
Jones To Explore All Coaching Options

Jason Garrett is the eighth head coach in Cowboys history, but the first with the interim tag. IRVING, Texas - While it's easy to see the improvements Jason Garrett has made since taking over as head coach, the comments made by owner/GM Jerry Jones on Friday don't suggest the job will automatically go to Garrett in the offseason.
Jones was very careful with his words, and often emphasized points on both sides of the argument.
"I explore all possibilities," Jones said. "I always do. I look for what-ifs, and things with individuals where, in the case of a coach, they haven't expressed the direction of where they are going with their careers. I work through that."
But he has continued to reiterate throughout even this recent 3-1 surge on Garrett, that the 2010 season has and will continue to be a disappointment.
"I don't want anybody to confuse the positive from me with not understanding how much we need to be responsible for what we've done so far this year. It's called our record," Jones said. "What I'm really trying to say is we are very disappointed as to why we're even having the conversation to begin with.
"On the other hand, Jason's doing very well. I want to be real careful about, from my standpoint, overdoing any things (to imply that Garrett has) all the answers. I don't want to do that either. He's already been put in a tough situation, to have his coaching debut coming under these circumstances. I don't want to add to that."
Remember, Jones was on record as saying Super Bowl-winning coaches have inquired about the job. Some of those candidates could include Jon Gruden, Brian Billick, Tony Dungy and Bill Cowher.
When asked about the importance of having head-coaching experience, Jones said it is something he values more than he did when he first bought the team. The first four head coaching hires Jones made - Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey and Dave Campo - had never been an NFL head coach. Johnson and Switzer, both had won college national championships, but had never been a pro coaches at any position.
"I have a problem with going to school with the Dallas Cowboys," Jones said.
But he also said this situation with Garrett having been on staff for four seasons and now taking over for at least eight games, is rather unique.
"It takes it beyond a résumé because it's so firsthand," Jones said. "What we're doing, I get to look and analyze every little aspect of what we're doing. That's a real advantage.
"Of course, it's been an advantage to have Jason on this staff for the last three and a half years. I've been able to analyze every aspect of his activity. So all of that is a real advantage, and I'm not saying an advantage to him. I'm just saying that's an advantage in understanding and helping make a decision."
