The jury deliberating in the murder trial of Jodi Arias has reached a verdict, court officials said.

The verdict will be announced in court at 4:30 p.m. EST.

Arias, 32, is charged with first-degree murder for killing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in June 2008, in which she allegedly stabbed him 27 times, shot him in the head, and slit his throat.

She could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder.

Arias claims that she killed Alexander in self-defense after he flew into a violent rage during an argument in his Mesa, Ariz., home. Her attorneys have tried to convince the jury to find Arias guilty of manslaughter instead of murder.

Testimony in the trial lasted four months, beginning in January, and wrapped up on Friday, May 3.

The jury, made up of eight men and four women, have been deliberating for two and a half days.

Wasn't really a thread on this forum covering this, but it was a semi-big case. A number of documentaries covering it are out there.

Seems pretty cut and dry. If the jury comes back anything other than guilty, they're retarded.

Funny how they reached and read the verdict the same day as the Benghazi hearings.

Must have been a real head-scratcher trying this case. Stabbed 30+ times and a slit throat. Yeah, that's self-defense alright.

I think what probably happened - and I haven't followed this case outside of watching a 48 Hours Mystery hour long show on it.... but what it seemed to me happened is they had sexy time, he got in the shower, something pissed her off, she confronted him in the bathroom with a gun, he probably lunged at it, a shot was fired, didn't kill him, he fought, and a huge struggle ensued leading her to killing him.

She probably only wanted to scare him, but after the gun went off she either might've felt it was the point of no return and had to finish the job, or she truly felt scared.

Nevertheless.... guilty, guilty, guilty.

I just don't think her actions post crime was thought out at all, which leads me to believe she didn't expect it to happen.

I don't know though.

Arias case likely far from over

PHOENIX (AP) — A jury found Jodi Arias guilty of first-degree murder, but the case is far from over.

Arias, 32, was convicted of first-degree murder in the June 4, 2008, death of her Travis Alexander, her one-time boyfriend, at his suburban Phoenix home.

Testimony began in early January. Jurors reached a verdict Wednesday after deliberating for about 15 hours over four days.

The trial will now move into a phase during which prosecutors will argue the killing was committed in an especially cruel, heinous and depraved manner, called the "aggravation" phase. Both sides may call witnesses and show evidence during a mini trial of sorts. The jurors are the same and will reconvene at 1 p.m. Thursday.

There are two options for the jury:

OPTION 1:

The panel doesn't find the presence of aggravating factors. In this case, the judge dismisses them and sentences Arias to either the rest of her life in prison or life in prison with the possibility of release after 25 years.

OPTION 2:

The jurors find there were aggravating factors, and the case moves into a penalty phase. The same jury decides whether Arias should be executed or get life in prison. This portion of the case could go on for several weeks, and additional witnesses could be called by both sides. If jurors don't reach a unanimous agreement on the death penalty, the judge sentences Arias to either the rest of her life in prison or life in prison with the possibility of release after 25 years.
