Tony Romo has been maligned for his lack of leadership since he became the Cowboys’ starting quarterback.

He’s taken a step to reduce the criticism.

Romo, as he should be, has been at the forefront of getting the Cowboys’ veterans to work out during the NFL lockout. Romo believes it will help the team bond and get prepared faster once the lockout ends.

More important, he’s showing his teammates he’s not afraid to take the leadership mantle. As a quarterback, Romo has been thrust into the leadership role whether he wants it or not.

It’s always like that for the quarterback of the Cowboys. After all, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman set the standard.

Questions about Romo’s leadership have risen since he made the ill-fated decision to spend a weekend in Cabo during the week off before the Cowboys’ first playoff game in 2007. And they escalated with his annual attempt to qualify for golf’s U.S. Open.

Perception is reality, especially when he has one playoff win to his name in five seasons as a starter.

Maybe now he’ll get some credit from the fans for trying to keep the Cowboys united during the lockout.

Some wins next season will help, too.

This is going to be a huge season for Tony. He needs to stay healthy, if the offensive line allows him too.

I'd expect JG to take a different approach this year and run the ball more. Hopefully, the offensive line has improved a little for that to happen.

I know the NFL is a more pass happy league, but you still have to have an effective run game to even out the offense.

I'm more comfortable with a running back tandem of Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray than I was with Barber and Jones.
