Taylor: Changing defense from 3-4 to 4-3 doesn't solve Cowboys' problems

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

Question: Do you think the Cowboys would be better off going back to the 4-3? I know that the Cowboys never won a Super Bowl with anything but a 4-3 defense. How hard would it be to convert the defense to a 4-3?
Alfred Woodson

Jean-Jacques Taylor: The scheme is not the problem. It’s the players and the effort by some guys. Go to the 4-3, and DeMarcus Ware is not as good a player because he’d be much more disruptive as an outside linebacker than a 4-3 defensive end with his hand on the ground every play. He’s the best player, and the defense should suit his skill set better. I like the 3-4 because it makes you more athletic since you’ve replaced a lineman with a linebacker, and it gives you an endless collection of blitzes. Plus, the Cowboys have spent eight seasons transitioning into the 3-4. It would take the same type of effort and commitment to go to the 4-3. Last year, the Cowboys played the 3-4 and had one of the NFL’s best defenses.
