Sources: Jets fire Tony Sparano

The New York Jets have fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, who was informed of his dismissal Monday night, league and team sources said Tuesday morning.

Tony Sparano and the Jets were a marriage doomed to fail. Sparano didn't have enough talent at his disposal and didn't have the ability to craft creative game plans to atone for the lack of playmakers, Rich Cimini writes. Blog

The official move was made after a meeting between Jets owner Woody Johnson and coach Rex Ryan.

The Jets were ranked 30th in total offense in Sparano's first season in the role, doomed by their unsettled quarterback position.

Sparano's firing comes one day after the Jets parted ways with quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, according to a league source.

Cavanaugh, whose contract is set to expire, was Mark Sanchez's position coach from the moment he was drafted fifth overall in 2009. Sanchez regressed in 2012 under Cavanaugh and offense coordinator Sparano

Sanchez ultimately was removed from the starting spot for Greg McElroy in Week 16, though he started the finale after McElroy was ruled out with a concussion.

And Tim Tebow didn't have much of an impact after he was acquired in a trade with the Broncos as New York's Wildcat package was ineffective and the team wasn't sure how to use him in other packages.

The Jets also may lose defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The Buffalo Bills, under newly hired coach Doug Marrone, requested permission Monday to speak with Pettine about the same position, sources said. Permission has yet to be granted. Pettine, too, has an expiring contract.

The firings started last Monday, with the dismissal of longtime general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Since then, the coaching staff has been in limbo as the organization conducts its GM search. After a week off, during which Ryan's vacation in the Bahamas became front-page news, the coaches returned Monday.

Our offense was at it's best in 2007 when Sporano was in charge of it.

You can criticize him for failures in Miami and the Jets... two teams with horrible QBs. I'll take him. He's a good coach.

Except Sparano wasnt in charge of it, Garrett was.

He isnt a good offensive coach. He MIGHT be a decent OL coach, but we already have one of those and that guy is much higher regarded than Sparano.

if the goal is to have a better offensive coordinator, then go get a good one like Norv Turner or the guy from New Orleans who's worked under Sean Payton for years. Otherwise I dont see what good it does.

Where does he fit? We already have a OL coach/OC in name.

Plus Sparano was said to not like the fact that Garrett got all the credit in 2007 even though he had a lot of input. And that after Tony good-naturedly settled for a demotion here.

Garrett may have been "in charge" of it, but it was Sparano that ran it. Everyone knew that.

Either would be better options than what we have right now.

Garret will be the head coach. Start a new thread about the draft for the love of God.

2007 Cowboys offense w. Sparano: Giants defenders say it's difficult to defend because we have no tendencies.

2008 Cowboys offense w.o. Sparaon: Baltimore Ravens laugh at how predictible we are.

But yeah, it was Garrett in total control of 2007. He just forgot how to run an offense since.

This isnt true. Garrett redid the entire playbook when he took over, and called all the plays. he left some of the running game in tact, but nothing else. Sparano did not "run" the offense

Either would be better options than what we have right now.

Sparano was bad at running the offense in Miami, was stripped of his ability to run it and then fired. Then he got an OC job in NY, and stunka and got fired there. he iisnt an upgrade over anyone here.

HE could be a positional coach. He was the tight ends coach, then running game coordinator/line coach and then play caller under parcells here.

We simply ant run the ball. I personally think this organization needs to clean everyone out including Tom ciskowski and get a fresh start like so many other teams are doing, but that won't happen.

We need to run the ball, sporano has coached good running games so has cam Cameron and rb coach Jim skipper.

I wonder if they all end up here with the sole purpose of taking over the running side of the offense.

This is extremely naive. The drop off after Sparano left is no coincidence because its been steady for 5 seasons now.

At the time, I found it hard to imagine that the QB coach of Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon (with 2 seasons total experience) could just come in and completely design an offense and effectively run it. Now that Ginger has been exposed as a fraud over and over again, it's clear that Sparano was holding his hand the entire 2007 season.
