The New York Jets have fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, who was informed of his dismissal Monday night, league and team sources said Tuesday morning.
Tony Sparano and the Jets were a marriage doomed to fail. Sparano didn't have enough talent at his disposal and didn't have the ability to craft creative game plans to atone for the lack of playmakers, Rich Cimini writes. Blog
The official move was made after a meeting between Jets owner Woody Johnson and coach Rex Ryan.
The Jets were ranked 30th in total offense in Sparano's first season in the role, doomed by their unsettled quarterback position.
Sparano's firing comes one day after the Jets parted ways with quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, according to a league source.
Cavanaugh, whose contract is set to expire, was Mark Sanchez's position coach from the moment he was drafted fifth overall in 2009. Sanchez regressed in 2012 under Cavanaugh and offense coordinator Sparano
Sanchez ultimately was removed from the starting spot for Greg McElroy in Week 16, though he started the finale after McElroy was ruled out with a concussion.
And Tim Tebow didn't have much of an impact after he was acquired in a trade with the Broncos as New York's Wildcat package was ineffective and the team wasn't sure how to use him in other packages.
The Jets also may lose defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The Buffalo Bills, under newly hired coach Doug Marrone, requested permission Monday to speak with Pettine about the same position, sources said. Permission has yet to be granted. Pettine, too, has an expiring contract.
The firings started last Monday, with the dismissal of longtime general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Since then, the coaching staff has been in limbo as the organization conducts its GM search. After a week off, during which Ryan's vacation in the Bahamas became front-page news, the coaches returned Monday.
