In meeting with reporters on Friday, owner Jerry Jones had an interesting answer to a rather common and expected question.
When asked if he anticipated the Cowboys making any roster moves before the March 3 deadline, Jones said no, but then left the door open for another.
“No, (but) there could be one exception,” Jones said. “I probably won’t do that. At this time, on our roster, there’s only one – as of that date. We have the right to do that later as well.”
So basically, Jones dismissed it but there is someone he’s got in mind.
We’re talking about the guys like Marion Barber, Roy Williams, Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo and Terence Newman. Those are the five guys who are getting the most attention in regards to potential cuts.
Personally, I’d be surprised if something like that occurred with Williams and Newman at all. Both of them wouldn’t help the Cowboys that much in terms of saving money. And right now, wide receiver and cornerback are on-the-fence needs, in my opinion. Of course, cutting those two players and it immediately makes that position a need.
The same goes for Colombo and Davis, but it seems like the Cowboys are looking to improve those positions regardless. As for Barber, I don’t think cutting him automatically creates a huge need where the Cowboys would have to draft a Mark Ingram or someone. Of course, they would likely add a third RB to the mix.
So to me, the candidates for Jerry’s exception to the rule would be Davis, Colombo and Barber, probably in that order.
