MINNEAPOLIS -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted that his team's 1-4 start has drained his optimism, but he declared that Wade Phillips would remain the head coach for at least the rest of the season.

Jones addressed Phillips' job status without prompting in the Cowboys' locker room after Sunday's penalty-plagued 24-21 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. He reminded reporters that he had never fired a coach in midseason and said that Phillips would not be the first.

"I would never consider doing that during the season," Jones said.

However, Jones did not give Phillips a vote of confidence. He acknowledged that the Cowboys are in serious trouble due in large part to a glaring lack of discipline.

"I'm not [optimistic]," Jones said. "I'm very disappointed. I realize the challenge that we've got, and we're not playing well enough to get it done right now. We're running out of the opportunity to make this season what we meant it to be."

The Cowboys were penalized 11 times for 91 yards against the Vikings, including calls that negated a 68-yard touchdown pass to Miles Austin and a 34-yard punt return by Dez Bryant. It was the third game this season -- and second week in a row -- that the Cowboys have been flagged at least 11 times.

"Obviously, it's coaching," Phillips said. "We're going to keep working on it until we get it right."

lol You just sealed your firing after the season right there, Wade.

You won't get it right. It's too late for that.

I feel pretty confident that, after 30+ years of coaching . . . Wade is THIS close to figuring out how to get it right.

I used to think Wade was good for our defense.

Now I just think he's just wasting space on the sidelines.

How close is he to figuring it out that maybe a zone defense near the goal line is not the way to go?

The fact that Wade is still the coach tells me Jason Garrett is no longer "in the family portrait". Otherwise you'd think he'd give him a test drive while there's time.

I still love Garrett and I think he'd make an even better head coach, he's already the best offensive coord in the league.

I agree.

And it honestly wouldn't bother me if Garrett was the next head coach.

But yeah . . . if it hasn't happened yet, it's not going to. He's out with Wade at years end.

I don't make that connection at all.

It's five games into the season. A little early to be firing a head coach, if you wanted to do it in season.

And besides, it's bad business to do something like that. I think it gives you a bad reputation around the league. And I don't know what you gain from it. So Garrett's now the coach. But with the same staff and players. He can't begin to put his stamp on the team until the offseason anyway.

I don't think Garret will be here next year unless he's the head coach.

I like Garrett but why give him a free pass and fire Wade? Yeah the Oline is bad so his hands are tied with play calling.

The offense and defense are both struggling. Although, I would like to have Cowher as head coach and Garrett still our OC.

Then maybe have Cowher decide who he wants to run the defense. But I don't want the head coach running the defense again.

Bringing up old shit:

Who hires the OC before the head coach? If that doesn't tell you something about structure and culture, I don't know what does.

Saying that, Garrett is the best in the Biz.

Getting back to what you said, Sbk.

Jerrys business in handling the team already has a bad label when it comes to his constant meddling. Trey wingo said something after the Titans loss that gave me chills. Something about Jerry being the problem. It's common knowledge that he's in the way. That would be more of a turn off for me anyway.

On Garret not putting his stamp this year, I can agree with that, all other coaches would be retained and dealt with in the offseason. It wouldn't change much. I just hate seeing that fat asshole trekking around the sideline rubbing his forehead and pumping his T-Rex arms.

My guidelines for hiring the next head coach would be, no white hair or tits.

You are on crack if you think Garrett is the best OC.

Never said it wasn't debatable, it just happens to be my opinion. I wouldn't trade offensive coords with any team. Garrett has these guys moving up and down the field. Penalties and piss poor offensive line play is really limiting what this offense can do, IMO. Even with those glaring troubles, Garrett still has this offense piling up yards like the Gov. prints money.

I'd like to see Garrett as the new head coach with Ray Sherman as the Offensive Assistant/Wide Reciever coach and Garrett's brother still at tight ends. All the other guys can hit the Fing road.

As long as this buffoon gets the axe a minute after our last game I'm fine.

Nobody can come here and change this team this year.

I don't know if Garrett is the answer but if Jerry is hell bent on making Garrett the headcoach we might as well do it now.

We might as well face it dudes, we don't own the Cowboys and the man that does is gonna do what he wants and we know he's leaning towards Garrett.

At least I don't think Garrett is the type to be too much of a player's coach like Wade. Hell I don't think he will be afraid to bench anyone like Wade too.

I hope the fire he showed during coach's meetings when the Boy's were on HardKnocks wasn't an act..

He seems like a sharp guy and his brother does too. If we keep him around we don't have to change offenses. All we need is a good defensive coordinator and of course all the other assistant coaching positions besides WR and TEs.

If we can sign a couple of solid lineman and draft a stud with our high first round pick we'll be in better shape for 2011 than a lot of people think.

Oh, I believe Jerry is pretty much laughed at around the league. He desperately wants that respect as a football guy, but he'll never get it.

This guy is one sick individual. I've never seen someone so concerned with public perception. Don't believe the hype. He'd rather lose this way than see a Jimmy Johnson lauded as a hero as the trophies add up.

I don't see the point with making Garrett the head coach now. Unless you intend on keeping him for the future. Coaching the last 11 games of this season isn't a fair trial run. He needs to have his offseason to address the staff and the preparation of the team. It wouldn't be fair to judge him without that. He doesn't have a magic wand to wave to fix things on the fly.

Like I said before, I think Garrett could go to a team like the Ravens or Eagles and have a lot of success as a head coach. Here? I'm not so sure. I don't know that a young coordinator can make that transition working for Jerry.

I haven't ranked them, but he'd definitely be in my top 3.

What he does routinely with no offensive line and no team discipline, working in that circus environment the owner creates, impresses the hell out of me.

Our loss yesterday is like the others. Players put in a position to get it done. Players don't get it done. Joe Fan screams at the coordinator. Rinse, Lather, Repeat.

If Jerry doesn't finally learn to get the F out of the way then he'll have a ton of empty seats at Cowboys Stadium. I don't know what the average fan disposition is towards him and the team but the Cowboys have been strongly supported since 1996 with only 1 playoff win. I'll bet the fanbase is getting a litle tired of this shit.

You couldn't give me free tickets to see the Giants and expect me to be there. I'm not driving 180 miles and then paying for parking and food to see this shit.
