INDIANAPOLIS -- Jason Garrett has a contract that runs out after the 2014 season, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones sees Garrett as the coach in 2015 and beyond.

“Jason should know and I know that he knows that the plan here is and has been for him to be long term,” Jones said, “and long term certainly being beyond this year as the coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Jones The Cowboys have posted a 29-27 record with Garrett and have finished the last three seasons with 8-8 records, missing the playoffs with Week 17 losses to the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

“It should be a frustration for me to be sitting here with Jason Garrett having been the head coach for three and a half years and having been here (seven) years and be 8-8 the last three years,” Jones said. “So I'm just saying that's a careful evaluation. Does that mean I don't want Jason? I think I want us to have the opportunity and that's why he's staying, to have the opportunity to benefit from this experience over the period of time.”

Garrett isn't the only coach in the final year of his deal. Passing game coordinator Scott Linehan and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli are signed through 2014. Jones said some coaches have deals past 2014 and beyond.

“There are millions of people that are getting up this morning and walking out and working and if things don't go well for them this year will not be where they want to be next year,” Jones said.

Jones said the incentive is there for Garrett to perform.

“He's got a high tolerance for ambiguity,” Jones said. “He does. That's very important with this situation.”

Except for you and Jason

Yeah ok Jerry.

That's why you haven't given him an extension, because you are so convinced he will be the "long term" answer.

Hostiles new stance is that nobody knows whether this is JGs last year of his deal or not. Neither have specifically said so and an extension could already have been secretly agreed to without anyone else knowing.

I guess he thinks everybody else is just stupid

I think this is one of two things:

1. Jerry deep down wants Jason to be the long term answer, but he's got to earn it.

2. Jerry is saying all the right things, because honestly, what else is he supposed to say? But truly, action speaks louder than words. If he was sure Jason was the long term answer, there'd be an extension.

I truly believe Jerry thinks having all these ex- Head coaches will help Jason Garrett become a good head coach. Not gonna happen. Plus, didn't Jerry say he doesn't want a HC who wasn't involved with either the offense or defense (walk around coach) ?

I'm sure Jerry wants Garrett to be the long term answer. He can run rough shod over him. No walking on eggshells

Winning? Eh I'm making money.

Well we know he has outstanding sources.
Yeah, so his sources can't tell him how long Garrett's contract term is? He knows all about the inner workings of this organization, but he can't confirm or deny that this is the last year of Garrett's deal? Or could it be him trying to save face because Garrett hasn't gotten an extension?

The common refrain has been that "we can see what Garrett is building here". This often refers to hardworking guys with good attitudes doing their best.

In reality we have less talent then we've had in a decade and no money.

The main difference between this team and a Campo team is Tony Romo. The offensive line might be a little bit better and we have a better MLB, when he plays. That's it.

And once again Junk hits it right on the head. Jerry truly cares more about making money than winning a football game, then again he did go millions into debt to make that horrible stadium of his

It's not the stadium I envisioned when I saw a virtual tour of it at DC.com a year before they started building it. I'd rather he renovated Texas Stadium and we can go back to having real fans attend games and not a bunch of snots who act like they're watching a tennis match unless we have a big 3rd down to convert on offense. Then they have to be told to be quiet.

It's moronic to suggest those two things aren't intertwined. It's not a shock when, each year the super bowl contestants lead the league in merchandise sales. The Cowboys are up there normally, it would skyrocket even more. Jerry may care about his ego more than winning, but not money.

Can't agree with you CobraKai (love that handle by the way)... With all the truly stupid decisions made by Jerry, it just shows me that all he cares about is $$$$$

With our teams total failure at the end of the season every single year it doesn't take a brain surgeon to get rid of our head coach, but Jerry never does

How does keeping Garrett get him more money? If anything it has done the opposite. That's much more an ego move. He hand-picked Jason, did everything to get him from Miami, and won the war with Bmore to keep him. That's Jerry's guy. Money's got nothing to do with it.

I just don't get what the reasoning is. If Dallas gets to the playoffs and beyond this year, the catalysts should be rewarded not the unchanging. Jason would not even allow change last year even when it was purported that Callahan was calling plays. So if somehow Marinelli fixes the defense and Linehan and Callahan fix the offense, there is still no reason to keep Jason.

He's concentrating on defense now. You know, since he's a defensive mastermind like Belicheck.
