Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knew it was risky to go with three rookie offensive linemen in the “dress rehearsal” third preseason game Saturday night.

But he understood the reasons behind it – not only that the Cowboys are trying to figure out what to do with veteran Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode, but also that head coach Jason Garrett is holding players accountable for their performance. No matter their resume.

Saturday night, the Cowboys held Gurode out and used rookie Kevin Kowalski at center for the whole game.

“Jason Garrett is doing an outstanding job of looking, evaluating, putting the emphasis on ‘I’m evaluating on not what you’ve been rewarded, not what your Pro Bowls are, but how are you playing right now?’ And it’s working. I think that’s what you’re seeing in the offensive line. But it’s all over the team.”

One of Garrett’s favorite lines in training camp was to say the Cowboys are trying to create competition all over the team. And that they will keep creating it throughout the season.

It sounds as if it has impressed Jones.

“He’s a young coach. He can cut and shoot,” Jones said. “We play guys that have a chance to get some time, and in this particular case, how valuable can it be for Kowalski to come up here and take all the snaps at center against the Minnesota Vikings – mostly their firsts? Tremendous experience.”

I've decided I'm against the Gurode release because he's a comfortable name. He's familiar. And he has been to Pro Bowls.

There's a sense of security there, even if it is false.

But then the reality is that this offensive line has been pretty bad for a number of years - so something has to give.

Ultimately, I'm placing my trust in Garrett. I just wish Costa wasn't injured.

Also... random thought...

With Gurodes pending release because of poor performance, and players like Brian Waters still being unsigned and Donovan McNabb making the list, et cetera... wasn't that whole NFL Network Top 100 list just a big bag of shit?

When are they going to apply this concept to Bradie James? If they want to be taken seriously with all this, how can they ignore James? He is the main reason why our run defense sucks.

It took Jerry over 20 years to realize this?

If this is true... why is Montrae still with the team?

Why is he returning to practice this week, while Gurode sits on the sidelines.

Even if you don't like Gurode at center, I'd bet dollars to donuts he'd be a better guard than Holland.

Gurode is trictly financial at this point. I think he is trying to do something with Gurode to help with the 2012 cap. As for Holland...since they gave him the 500K roster bonus they have to at least see if he has anything.

I don't understand what cutting Gurode gets us.

Younger and better. Gurode is aging, so his play will start to decline anyways.

I like what Garrett is doing with the roster. He's churning the shit out of it.

This is what good coaches do. Wade didn't have the sack to do it. Then again Jerruh didn't trust him to do it.

I'll take the advice from a Princeton grad (JG) any day of the week.

Someone answered this question yesterday, because he's injured.

It certainly doesn't get us better line play.

Right now, maybe not, but in the long run I do. I'm glad JG is taking out the trash.

That's why I think this team isn't ready for a Super Bowl run yet.

$5.5 million next offseason for free agency. That's about it. It certainly doesn't get us better line play.

I dont know how you can say that with any certainty, considering the coaching staff apparently informed Jones that Gurode wasnt going to start.

I can understand Gurode losing his starting role but will Costa be ready come the Jets game? Kowalski may have some upside but he is far from ready to start IMO. Would like to see the line keep some cohesion without a lot of integral changes just to accommodate one position and that includes keeping Holland on the sidelines.

Apparently the coaches are comfortable with Holland as a backup, and that's alright. Because that's all he's good for.

So like. . . If Tony throws a few INTs he's gonna throw Kitna in and if he throws a few McGee?

I'm sorry, just not buying the "resume" and no matter who you are and what your resume is thing. Just say it's about money. That way everyone can just hate on Jerry and not Garret for this cluster fuck.
