For the first time since 2001, the Cowboys are 0-2. It's only the eighth time in franchise history and only once before have the Cowboys made the playoffs (1993).
They actually ended up repeating as Super Bowl champion that year after Emmitt Smith ended his contract dispute.
"It's just something you can't expect," owner and GM Jerry Jones said. "You can't anticipate it and you've got to realize it's quite a setback. Everything in me is about being optimistic. I know at the end of the day these losses if we can have a season that gets us into the playoffs, these losses can be mitigated."
It should be pointed out the 2007 New York Giants started out 0-2 and won the Super Bowl but that is the exception. The general rule is a team doesn't even make the playoffs.
More quotes from Jones below:
On if he's surprised that his team lost the turnover battle: "Yes, and I'm surprised we're not getting turnovers, but we're just not doing that and that certainly was a big difference today."
On what he feels is appropriate to criticize about the team's play: "The execution; the basic stuff. You want to call a turnover a mistake; I'll call it with you there on that. We just weren't able to get up on them, so to speak, or get what you call the momentum or whatever you want. We just never looked downhill at them. They were ahead of us looking uphill all afternoon."
On if it's frustrating with the offense gaining yardage but not turning that into points: "I think that we're getting those yards, though seemingly it may be long yardage situations that aren't getting the chains moving. Now, I don't know about this game. I certainly will look to get and see that. But the point is at the end of the day, we don't have the one thing that counts. You can look at all the stats, and I like to do that, and you can look at it on an individual basis or otherwise. But this is across the board. This isn't just the offense. It's defense; it's special teams that helped put us in this spot. It's across the board."
On penalties being a problem in another game: "I'd say the big play of the game that I can remember that made a lot of difference was the one they made on third-and-15 when they made the long throw down the middle and made it. Again, I'm very disappointed and I'm disappointed for our fans, first of all. They have and should expect more in terms of the record and we've dug a big hole here and we've got a lot of work to do even have a chance of getting out of it."
On if he anticipates making roster moves at cornerback and tight end due to the lack of numbers at the positions: "I'm not so sure. We'll sit down and look at it. I don't know about the tight end thing. I don't have that information and if we need to make a roster move there and I don't know if we need to make a move at corner yet. We've got initial, from a look back here (locker room training room), that it examines well. The x-ray was negative on (Mike) Jenkins. It examined well; now that doesn't mean anything until we get him in there tomorrow."
