Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after Dallas’ 31-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams:
On DeMarco Murray’s performance:
“I thought the offensive line played well. I thought our offense had a really good plan. Certainly, what we think of Jeff Fisher there is nobody I respect more than Jeff. That makes you feel good to come out and have a game like that. Our defense was really impressive. We had a lot of guys playing, and that’s a plus too.”
On the Cowboys playing a complete game:
“I know that (Jason) Hatcher really expressed himself emotionally this week at practice. Justin (Durant) did the same thing in there, getting some good leadership from those guys, where it needs to come from, so I’m pleased with that. A lot of good things happen when you can run the ball, when you can have some good offense and back it up with that defense.”
On DeMarcus Ware becoming the franchise’s all-time sack leader:
“I will never forget. Bill (Parcells) and I made a bet when we drafted him and had a little fun with it. I think of it every time I think of his number of sacks. I can’t say that it’s unexpected because of how hard he works and his talent level and just his competiveness. It doesn’t surprise me at all.”
On his bet with Parcells:
“We had a bet that if he didn’t average so many sacks over the first five years then he got five rides a year on his G5 airplane. So I said if he does average more than that, we signed the contract, and if he does average more than that, I get to go with his significant other, but he doesn’t get to go.”
On Hatcher’s speech to the defense:
“Inspirational with Hatcher especially inspiring the team and of course, those guys back it up with play. In order to really make that work with emotion and persuasion then you need to be a real player. Of course, those two guys had the game to back it up today.”
On being the only NFC East team to win a game outside of the division:
“We were very disappointed last week for that very reason. We all know that this thing is pretty even across the NFL. That was a setback last week. Our team responded and played well here. If this means that AT&T is lucky for us then so be it. We’ll have a much better chance at getting the wins that we want if we can win them all here.”
On the play of J.J. Wilcox:
“That was quite an accomplishment for him to start the game, and he played well. Of course that interception, you see that running back come out in him, and he was headed for the house. I think that you all saw it in training camp, that he had a chance to be a high caliber player. We think that’ll be the case. I look out there, and I see him, and I see (Barry) Church and I see guys like (Jeff) Heath and I see a safety position that I kind of like. That did come within the last few months.”
On when was the last time he saw the defense play that well:
“I can’t recall. I don’t know. I’m going to look at the stats, but I saw what was it? Minus two going midway through the third quarter. Minus two yards. What was impressive was the offense had a chance, had the bad field position plus the defense had to earn it with three and outs. Those weren’t necessarily happening with turnovers. I can’t recall when I’ve seen us play better ever.”
On how many games he’s been able to sit back and say, ‘we’ve got this one’:
“It was added up. It’s approximately 500 games since I’ve been with the Cowboys in 25 years. I bet I can count on 15 fingers, 20 fingers the number of games that have had this kind of positive play, get the lead and have this kind of ultimate outcome. You don’t get many in the NFL. With those, you usually have some go the other way if you look at that many ball games.”
On Miles Austin’s injury:
“I don’t know the extent of it, and I don’t know that we do right now. I don’t know.”
On if he paid attention to what was going on in the NFC East today:
“No. I haven’t looked. I do not know the Giants score. I do know the Giants lost. But I didn’t look at the game or look at the score. I saw an early score. But I didn’t see the score.”
On the play of the defensive line:
“Out of 10, five weren’t on the roster when we started training camp. I’m really pleased because you saw them out there making plays. It does show that to some degree, a different system makes you use players that you might not have used in a different system. Some of these guys aren’t as long as maybe we’ve always thought they needed to be in the 3-4 and are coming in here and really contributing so we’ll keep this up. I have to give Rod (Marinelli) and Monte (Kiffin) all the credit and Jason (Garrett) of course.”
On how important it was to commit to the run:
“I think it just shows that it’s such a vital part of the football game both physically what it does to your defense, to the opposing defense and what it opens up for you. We’re pleased. I know we got a lot of play action in. I know that the offensive staff, as well as, Tony (Romo) were pleased with that. The run really allows that to get set up or vice versa. That really made for a complete game plan. I was glad to see (Gavin) Escobar make the one catch he made, but I was really glad to almost see him make another catch. You have to give him a little ballet there. He’s got to learn to get that toe down because he can sure go up and catch it.”
On DeMarco Murray having another big game against the Rams:
“Against Jeff because this guy knows defense. But it was obvious they were not stacking up against the run. They didn’t want to give us much. They didn’t want to give us a lot in the passing game so that gave us a chance. I really suspected they’d come out and stack it up against the run.”
On if it’s surprising to be the only NFC East team to win a game outside of the division:
“I think that before we start putting the bird on the coffin, figuratively speaking, I think we better wait and see some more games played. This division could turn out to be strong as horse radish. It’s early. These teams are evolving and injury, and that’s the way we’ve set thing up in the league, competitively.
