Pardon me if I don't believe Wade Phillips' future is necessarily sealed because Jerry Jones said, "yes," when asked if Phillips would be the coach for the rest of the season on his weekly spot with Newy Scruggs on The Fan.
In fact, the one-word answer spoke volumes.
When Jones has been asked about Phillips' tenure before he would expound on the reasons why the coach should stay, what he means to the defense, how in-season moves don't help, blah, blah, blah. And as David Moore just pointed out: when has Jerry Jones given a one-word answer on anything?
There is no other way Jones can answer the question. If he opens the possibility of a coaching move, then there is mass hysteria. We go to Phillips and ask for a comment. We go to the players for comment. We wait for Jones to leave his office to get a comment.
Maybe Jones is being truthful or maybe he is being truthful for right now.
Should the Cowboys go to Green Bay and get pummeled on Sunday, would it be terribly surprising to learn there would be a press conference to announce a coaching change? No, it wouldn't.
And Jones would not care if he was backed into a corner by the comments he has made the during this losing streak about Phillips.
A couple of weeks ago Jones said he does not foresee a lot of coaching changes in the off-season. While he did not say why, he was referring to the labor strife that will hit the NFL once the season ends. If there is a lockout, then why would a team spend millions to fire a coaching staff and then hire another coaching staff? There would be no way for the new staff to implement what it would want with little or no training camp/organized team activities or mini-camps.
It sort of makes an in-season change make even more sense. At least the new coach would have a chance to put his stamp on the place, even for a couple of months.
