Jerry Jones: Jason Garrett's lack of experience a huge factor
09:45 PM CST on Saturday, December 25, 2010
From Staff Reports
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke to NFL Network before the Cardinals-Cowboys game. Some highlights:
On when he will decide on the new coach and if it will happen Jan. 3 after the final Cowboys game: We don’t have a timing issue there are other factors that involved. At some point we will go through that process.
On what he's seen from Jason Garrett: I know how smart he is. I know how much he really can motivate. He's very articulate. We had it in mind when he was hired that someday he could be coach of the Cowboys there is no question about that. He has exceeded my expectations. And so all of that comes into play. There is no doubt in my mind that he has the organizational ability the football instincts. …There is no doubt he has the skills to be a head coach in the National Football League. The question is when? The facts are that he's had five games where he's been a head coach that includes junior high schools, high schools, all of them. We don't have time to have a bad time with the Dallas Cowboys. We need to hit the ground running next year; this has been too much of a disappointment this year. That's the thing I am going to be thinking about -- the experience factor.
On if the criticism of his decision-making comes into play: I think that's fair. If you spend most of your life literally working for yourself than the mirror is the thing you have to have to get straight. You have to do some changing and reevaluating.
On if he wants a new coach to have personnel control (shop the groceries): I'll shop the groceries because I got to eat them too. Bill (Parcells) and I shopped for groceries and had a good time doing it. The decision-making process we get to enjoy with the Cowboys is a positive thing. I would have never dreamed we would have been this long since we won another Super Bowl.
On Jon Gruden , Bill Cowher: Has Jerry talked to anyone? I’m a big believer in a challenge and doing something that has never done before. You know there’s never been a head coach that won a Super Bowl with one team that won it with another. Never.
Is that a dream for you Jerry? I got a lot of dreams (laughs).
