The Cowboys' last tangible goal this season has been erased. With no shot at the playoffs, Dallas is left with some choices that are far from ideal and even a bit abstract. In the final three weeks, should it work to establish a habit of winning by using its best players and competing as if there were something at stake? Or should it use the remaining games to evaluate the players who could be the future of the franchise?
Well, it appears that owner and general manager Jerry Jones is more in favor of the first option mentioned.
"We want to go win those games," Jones said Sunday after the Cowboys lost to the Eagles 30-27 . "We want to give us, any way we can, the best chance to win. It's important that we feel good about what we're doing.
"It's important to me that our fans can see that there is something potentially to feel good about. That's very important to me. With what we've got ahead of us next year, in the offseason, we'll try to make every score and every down we can. So, it's all out for me."
On the surface, this approach makes sense, but not because of the reasons Jones outlined. In reality, Jones needs a greater sample size of games to determine if Jason Garrett should remain the team's coach. Assessing Garrett's worth is impossible if he is not playing with a full deck of cards. That's probably why Jones is adamant about finishing the season as if the team were in contention. He needs to gather as much evidence as he can to establish whether Garrett is truly the right man for the job.
