Jerry Jones, the NFL's only owner/general manager, won't even consider changing the structure of the Dallas Cowboys' front office, despite the fact that disappointing seasons have been the norm since the franchise's mid-1990s dynasty died.
"The facts are that I've spent 22 years doing this exactly the same way," Jones said Tuesday on KRLD-FM. "I've made a lot of changes from year to year as time goes along, but frankly, I know that when we do not have the kind of success, when we don't have expectations lived up to, the one that should get the most heat is the one that ultimately makes the decisions, period, with the Dallas Cowboys. And that's me."

Jones dismissed the idea of hiring a general manager from outside the organization, such as Bill Polian after the Indianapolis Colts fired the architect of their Super Bowl team. Jones emphasized that he uses information from many different sources to make football decisions.

In Jones' mind, adding a general manager to the payroll would clutter the decision-making process, not improve it.
"The thing you've got to realize is that when you have an owner that is full time as the owner, then you create a situation where you have as much turnover at GM as you do at the coaching level," Jones said. "And I think that just deters from the mix."
The Cowboys have had six head coaches, one general manager and one playoff win in the last 15 seasons.
The Cowboys just completed an 8-8 season in which they beat only one team that finished .500 or better. But Jones believes his team was talented enough to make a playoff run, and he's pleased with the coaching.
"More often than not, when you're in the kind of shape we are statistically, you're doing better in the playoffs," Jones said.

And yet teams like Pitt, NE and GB manage the "clutter" just fine.

its amazing.

This guy will take 20 years of average to below average and then point to a season like 07 where we didnt finish the deal and use that year as an example that he can build a team or something.

it just sucks for us. It will never change. like i said in another thread, this organization is run like a family owned grocery store. its not just jerry to me as the gm, all the duties are split up between his sons, daughter and tom ciskowski.

it seems its just a mess.

which makes me wonder if behind the scenes garrett is really being spread to thin, having to manage alot more than any of us even realize. I think that is what wore parcells out and made him walk in 06, not the football or the coaching...but the managing of everything that is just too much.

if garrett is going to be here I hope it doesnt destroy him to quickly either.

I think that’s why i am hesitant to put a lot of blame on the coaching staff. I know i have worked for owners that have hindered the success of a company. They don’t have in a place a sound foundation for the company. The structure of the Dallas Cowboys is flawed. Results are the proof. I have lost all faith that Jerry Jones knows how to build a successful (winning) football team.

Only took 15 years but it seems like the majority now realize Jerry is a moron who has been ruining the team for all these years, or at least more are now being open about it.

Back in the late '90's it seemed like there were only a handful of us on these boards that saw through Jerry and his B.S. and knew he was our main problem and not just age, free agents, cap, etc. A few more started seeing it during the Campo years, but then we luckily had the respite with BP being hired. But then after that, many thought that Jerry had changed for good or at least convinced themselves he had and went into denial when Jerry started doing much of the same things he did back in the Switzer/Gailey/Campo years, like hire an OC before hiring Wade and hire other members of the staff instead of letting the HC do it, etc.

On one hand it's good to see more people seeing it for what it is, but at the same time it's sickening that the same crap is still going on. It's almost like "Groundhog's Day" being repeated over and over again.
