Jerry Jones said several times as the end of the season approached that Jason Garrett wouldn’t be fired as head coach, but he never addressed Rob Ryan’s status as defensive coordinator.
Ryan’s first season in Dallas wasn’t a great success. Sunday night’s 31-14 loss to the Giants was the last of several bad games for the Cowboys defense over the course of the year and even in games when they played well in general, the Arizona loss for example, they were unable to come up with big stops when the game was on the line. That’s led to some questions about whether or not Ryan would return for another year.
Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram listened to Jones on the radio Tuesday and reports that Jones said he expects to have Ryan back for another season. Hill also notes that Ryan hopes to get in the mix for a head coaching job this offseason, but his name has yet to pop up on the list of interviews for any vacancies.
The lockout certainly didn’t help Ryan implement a scheme-heavy system. He had no time to teach it to the players and the condensed nature of the offseason didn’t provide much chance to bring in players who would be optimal fits. That doesn’t excuse performances like the one in the first Eagles game or the season-ending loss, but it likely plays a role in any decision about moving forward with Ryan running the defense.
