Jerry Jones: Cowboys went conservative and it bit us

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 16, 2011, 9:59 PM EDT

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hinted after today’s loss to the Patriots that he wasn’t happy with coach Jason Garrett’s play calling late in the game.

“This game was decided right down there at the end, and I am so proud of these players, the way they competed tonight,” Jones said. “We rolled the dice at the end and went conservative rather than try to get some points and it bit us.”

So Jones is proud of the players . . . but the coach? Well, Jones’s comments suggest that he was none too pleased with Garrett calling three straight running plays with the Cowboys holding onto a 16-13 lead with three minutes to go in the game. Garrett obviously thought keeping the ball on the ground was the wise course of action because it would force the Patriots to use their timeouts, but the third running play, on third-and-18, was basically a statement from Garrett that he didn’t trust Tony Romo to make a play.

And after the ensuing punt, Tom Brady made a bunch of plays, marching the Patriots down the field for the game-winning touchdown.

“Whenever you get the ball into the hands of a player like Brady at home, you’ve got problems,” Jones said. “We are up here on their field and we knew what the odds were, so we flipped a coin and it came up against us. We know what [the Patriots] are about and we knew what our challenge was here. If you were in a playoff game, you’d probably drive it home. You always second guess whether or not we should have tried to run a little offense down there instead of running it three times.”

And Jones didn’t hesitate to second-guess his own coach after a tough loss.

You think? I don't like Jones' interference, but maybe in this case it's warranted. If we had a minute left in the game, then I can understand Garrett doing something like that, but with 3:36 left?

Of course had Romo thrown a pick, Garrett would have been a f'in morion for calling a pass with the lead on the road, right?

You know who else went conservative?

Jerry Fucking Jones did. He went conservative this offseason when he, the GM, decided that Costa, Kosier and Nagy were the answers to the offensive line's problems.

How's that working out for you, Talent Evaluator?

Nagy was never expected to be a starter. Holland was, and he got hurt again. I guess they then signed Dockery with the idea that he would start, and he got hurt too. Costa beat out Gurode. Kosier was a guy everyone said we should resign, and they kept him for a fairly average salary cap charge.

No. Not at all. You got it all wrong dbair with me. I had no problem with the playcalling against the Lions. None whatsoever. That was all on Romo. But this loss is on Garrett. Period. That second to last series... was just called badly. I WANTED SOME PASSES. Don't go for any kill shots downfield, just some intermeidate pass plays to move the chains and eat up clock. Why couldn't we mix it up? Three straight runs would have been just as bad as three straight passes.

Garrett SHUT IT DOWN WAY TOO EALRY, and we paid for it.

No. Conservative would have been if he had kept the same damn shit. I'm sorry, you can badmouth those players all you want, but they are not the reasons why we lost these games.

Garrett's seen his veteran QB meltdown twice this yr with leads, so he decided to take the ball out of his hands. Thats why they called runs.

He was banking on the defense doing their job, and for the 2nd straight game they gave up a GW TD late in the 4th qtr.

Ryan deserves as much blame as anyone, as do the defensive players themselves.

He couldn't retain that line. It was obvious a few years ago that they were useless. All he did was throw late round draft picks and a UDFA in there and prayed for the best.

Wow, just wow. You won't accept criticism of Garrett even if it comes from Jerry or Garrett himself (calling out his own play-calling in Detroit game).

Its fine to criticize him. But he isnt the only one who deserves blame, as some of you want to think.

I just hope he says f-it with the people who criticize the playcalling and throw the ball as much as it takes to win games. Its obvious they cant run it well enough to win games, so just go with what gives you the best chance. This is a passing team. Romo, Witten, Austin and Bryant are the best players. The OL pass blocks better than run blocks.

Again they had the lead at the end of the game, and the defense gave up a TD. Thats two games in a row.
