In the past owner and general manager Jerry Jones has acknowledged there is no head-coach-in-waiting clause in Jason Garrett's contract, but speaking on The Fan this morning Jones indicated there could be a way to work around the Rooney Rule if he wanted to remove the interim tag from Garrett's title.
"There are some extenuating circumstances involved here and I would have the opportunity on my decision, how we'll make it, I'll have the present that to the league," Jones said. "So we'll see how that goes but I can't give you any type of answer to that because I'm not sure I'm through working the process."
The Rooney Rule is clear that a team must interview a minority candidate even if it wants to name the interim coach to the full-time position unless that coach has a certain clause in his deal. In 2003, Jones interviewed Dennis Green by telephone, which the league saw as compliance with the rule, after a deal with Bill Parcells was all but in place.
