Jerry Jones: 'I don't want to sound like I have a gun to my head, I really want to adhere to what we call the Rooney Rule'
SportsDayDFW sports
Jerry Jones made his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Monday. The Cowboys owner/general manager touched on the team's future head coaching position and the disappointments of the 2010 season.
Here are the highlights.
On where he is at with addressing the head coaching situation:
"Well, we had a real busy day yesterday, in that regard. And we had another busy one last night. We spent quite a bit of time on the matter last night regarding coach, coaching staff and interviews that are required in the NFL. So, we'll be moving at a real fast pace. I just took a break to make this call and then I'll be back at it. But we're moving at a real good rate from a timing standpoint."
On when he thinks he'll name the head coach:
"I don't want to estimate that, really. All I know is that I expect a pretty immediate resolve."
On if it irked him that rumors were swirling that a head coach had already been decided:
"It didn't irk me at all. It was just not the case and I wanted to make real clear about that. And there was technical reasons for making it real clear because I want to, I don't want to sound like I have a gun to my head, I really want to adhere to what we call the Rooney Rule in the NFL and do the things as all we've agreed to do regarding minority hiring. I wanted to get that done right. And obviously you haven't done it right if you've already made a hire, yet haven't done your interview."
On if Jason Garrett is the best person to run this team:
"Let me just say this ... I'm really pleased with how this has turned out relative to these last eight ballgames. I'm really proud that we've had the success that we've had. I want to say this, there's no joy in Mudville here, regarding the success that we've had. But it's better than what it could have been. And that does give a real positive thing to evaluate regarding Jason."
On if he slipped when saying Jason Garrett should have input on the assistant coaching hires:
"I was using him as an example. When they asked about our head coach, I said Jason, if he were the head coach, then certainly he would have the kind of input that I think our fans would be totally and completely comfortable with. When I say input, ultimately the coach has to be hired by the team. Now, does the head coach have a lot to say about the positions? Of course. Jason had real input and a lot to say about the offensive side of the staff when he came four years ago. Jason had real input there. Of course, I interviewed him at that time for the head coaching job as well. He had real input into our staff and obviously Wade did."
On if any other team contacted him about speaking with Jason Garrett concerning their head coaching position:
"I'm not going to get into that one way or the other. And again, it has do to with, you might even say competition between clubs."
On if other teams would have to contact him about Jason Garrett because he is not an assistant anymore:
"The answer is yes. Our rules in the NFL are that if we want to talk to somebody, and Jason of course does have a contract for next year with the Dallas Cowboys right now. There's a form and procedure that you have to go and I visit directly with the owners of the team and I usually visit with the general manager if they're different."
On if a lot of guys he was counting on to step up this year didn't come through:
"Well, you know we ended up with five Pro Bowlers, which we're one of the top teams in the league with Pro Bowlers. Frankly, I thought when we started that if we had to be concerned about defense that we were in trouble. We had one of the best defensive gurus there is in all of pro football. We could not have gotten him had he not been the head coach. Other teams knew that. There's no question that he'll get a job some place certainly to run a defense. You would have thought that we had players that were brought in here to run the kinds of defense that we were running. And we had every reason to believe because we had several Pro Bowlers over there, and I'm not just being cavalier about it, that we'd have a dominating defense. I told Wade and I told everybody concerned that if I got to worry about the defense than we're in trouble. We had every reason to think that we'd be excellent on defense. And over on offense, you know what we think of Tony Romo and where he is in his career. If you look at it pretty closely, we got a lot of air sucked out of us when he went down. Not that we played outstanding the four games before but we did get a lot of air sucked out of us."
