SAN ANTONIO -- Jerry Jones spent Friday trying to catch the biggest fish in the free agency market.
Jones ultimately failed, as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal with the NFC East rival Eagles.
"Bottom line is we’re ready," Jones said during an appearance on KRLD-FM after the Cowboys bowed out of the Asomugha sweepstakes. "We had an opportunity. We acted on it, and believe me we firmly acted on it until our eyes watered."
They acted on it throughout Friday afternoon's practice, when Jerry Jones and son/executive vice president Stephen Jones took turns talking on a cell phone while pacing the sidelines and an end zone.
At one point, Jerry handed the phone to defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who coached Asomugha for five seasons with the Oakland Raiders. Ryan talked on the phone for several minutes during drills while standing within 10 yards of Terence Newman, who might have been released if Asomugha agreed to come to Dallas.
"I will tell you that I did not get Rob to break from the drill and come over unless it was serious business for the Dallas Cowboys," Jerry said.
The Cowboys have plenty of business left to conduct. They re-signed defenisve end Marcus Spears to be a starter but still need depth at that position. They need to sign at least one starting safety, if not two.
But, for better or worse, the Cowboys missed their opportunity to make a major splash in the free agency market. All they've got to show for the Asomugha talks is Jerry's watery eyes.
