IRVING, Texas – Jerry Jones declared on his radio show Friday that the Cowboys will be the best they’ve been in “well over two years” on Sunday because of their health.
That’s a pretty bold claim, considering that the Cowboys won the NFC East and a playoff game a couple of seasons ago.
Jones is excited to see Miles Austin and Dez Bryant healthy together after recovering from a hamstring strain and bruised thigh, respectively. He’s also eager to see the complete cornerbacks corps for the first time all season with Orlando Scandrick returning from a high ankle sprain.
"This is the best team we've put on the field in well over two years and I say that because of the health aspect of it," Jones said on KRLD-FM. "I think we're in the best chance to compete, bringing the best team to the game in quite a long time."
Scandrick might not be a starter – coach Jason Garrett has been coy about the matter – but Jones believes the slot corner’s return ranks right up there with the receivers’ health in terms of impact.
“Scandrick is an important part of this equation,” Jones said. “He’ll make as big an impact to be coming off injury as any one of our players, including Miles, really including an improved Dez [Bryant]. He’ll make as big an impact, Scandrick will, as any player we’ve got.”
The Cowboys better be at their best. The Patriots haven’t lost at Gillette Stadium in Tom Brady’s last 30 regular-season home starts.
Jones considers the quality of competition an opportunity for the Cowboys. He compared the chance the Cowboys have this weekend to their 2009 win in New Orleans, which served as a springboard to the playoffs.
"Big wins away can really provide the underpinning for a season," Jones said. "[Two] years ago we went down to New Orleans and beat an undefeated New Orleans team and it really gave us a kickstart for the rest of the season. Those big road wins can be inspirational and hopefully we can have that with this game."
