Jeff Fisher could be trying to force his way out of Tennessee
Posted by Mike Florio on November 23, 2010, 7:03 PM EST

Most NFL observers believe that, after the season, Titans owner Bud Adams will have to choose between quarterback Vince Young and coach Jeff Fisher.

Fisher apparently is trying to make the decision easier for Adams.

At a time when the organization has issued a statement aimed at refuting a report from Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean that Young was asked to leave the facility on Monday, Fisher tells ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that, indeed, Young has been banned.

Here’s the money quote from Mort’s story: “Fisher made it clear that Young is currently not welcome at the facility at the present time.”

And so the bigger story here is that the team is trying to tiptoe its way around the situation, and Fisher is mincing no words. It’s a recipe for Fisher to eventually be the former coach of the Titans.

It’s not a surprise. Last year, someone (i.e., Fisher) leaked to Mortensen the notion that Adams’ decision to force Fisher to bench Kerry Collins for Young may have opened a “loophole” in Fisher’s contract that would have allowed Fisher to force his way out.

Said Mort at the time, “The Cowboys, the Bears. You never know.”

Over a year later, that same sentiment applies. Though Fisher’s six playoff appearances in 17 years and his career winning percentage of 54.6 shouldn’t move him into the presidency of the Fired Football Coaches Association, the Cowboys and Bears are the two teams that could be the most interested in Fisher.

We’d throw the Texans into the mix as well. And the chance that Fisher would return to Houston and remain in the division could be enough to get Adams to keep Fisher around.

Then again, dumping Young could trigger the same outcome. In a Twitter entry posted moments ago, Young provided a one-word update on his status.

“Houston.”

I've wanted Fisher. His no-nonsense approach would go over well with the Cowboys. My concern is that he might be burned out.

If Garrett is not our HC for the next season, then yes, Fisher would be my first Choice. One thing you can count on: he will put the best players out there regardless of draft status or contract.

He will bring in the right people for his staff.

So for me it's either Garrett or Fisher if he becomes available.

Bud Adams is a jackass if he really can't decide between Fisher or Young.

Young has shown time and time again he doesn't have the head for the game, or the personal disposition. When the going gets tough, he crumbles.

The threats of suicide years ago should've been a warning.

I've never understood that.

You make millions. . . playing football.

But wait, you're suicidal...

These assholes wouldn't survive one second in the real world.

But to comment on this story... Bud Adams would be a major dumb ass for letting a coach like Fisher go. IMO he's one of the few good ones left in the league, regardless of not having a SB ring.

If I'm Jerry Jones, I'm praying Fisher gets fired just in case Garrett doesn't look like the guy here in Dallas.

I will say this about Fisher.

Just look at the roster he has and how he has gotten these guys to win.

Yeah, they have Johnson, but look over their entire roster especially, at QB and he get's these guys prepared to win.

Just imagine what he could do with a very good football team and a good QB to lead his team. I wouldn't complain one bit if Fisher were to coach here.

That excuse doesn't fly.

He's been there since Reagan was President, it seems. If he never had a good QB, that's his problem.

I think our wagon is hitched to Garrett. He offers pretty much the same thing as Fisher, minus the experience and track record.

Oh, really? So Bud Adams has no say in the matter? He was all Vince Young.

My point was he didn't need a good QB to win in Tennessee. He's that good of a coach.

He can coach mediocre players. Jeff Fisher is was one the best coaches left in this league.

Because he's big in Texas.

I think Texans and their fans prefer Schaub. In fact, I think they also prefer Fisher over Kubiak and thaqt being the case, they wouldn't touch Young with a 10 ft. pole.

I agree.

But I think Young thinks he's big in Texas and that Houston would be interested.

I'd take Shaub drunk over Young.

I agree. He can get a lot out of a little. But he's been there forever and has a lot of say over personnel. If he's still having to make due with a little, he has to take some blame for it.

The Young pick was all the owner. I'm not counting that.

I'm sure most of us understands this but just in case Garrett doesn't work out, I think many of us would want Fisher. And like someone mentioned, of all the current HCs right now, he is one of the best HCs, despite not winning a SB.

He came about a foot short of possibly winning the SB.

If we ended up with Fisher, I hope he would bring his Oline coach.
