IRVING, Texas – Jay Ratliff, a Pro Bowl nose tackle the last three seasons, isn’t changing position.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan made it clear during his first meeting with the Valley Ranch media that he didn’t anticipate Ratliff having any problem playing nose tackle in his system.

There had been speculation that Ratliff, considered undersized for a 3-4 nose tackle at about 300 pounds, might move to defensive end. Ryan quickly shot down that idea.

“He’s a great player,” Ryan said of Ratliff. “Our system can find a spot for any great player. He’s going to do just fine over the football.”

Ratliff’s quickness and tenacity have allowed him to be a disruptive force as a nose tackle. However, his statistics dropped off significantly last season, when he had 3.5 sacks and no tackles for losses. He was credited with 13.5 tackles and 14 tackles for losses the previous two seasons.

Ryan, however, seems to have little doubt that Ratliff will wreak havoc in opposing backfields again.

“He’s an excellent player,” Ryan said. “I can’t wait to get to work with him. I already met him and what an encouraging thing that is, because if they’re all like him, we’re going to be in great shape.”

Mistake.
Agreed. Also, let's wait til you actually work with these guys in TC (fingers crossed) before making any final decisions.

Love Rob Ryan but the fact that he loves our ILB's scares me a little.

I'm sure he's going to pass a little positive BS off to the media, what else can he say that doesn't sound destructive?

Also Brady James had a decent year. He wasn't a car wreck. Sean Lee, when he played was very good. Brookings was the weak link and I think part of the problem was Phillips reluctance to not yank him off the field in passing downs.

While a good backup is desperately needed, 2 out of the 3 guys are more than serviceable.

Well Ryan, they are not all like him. And you will find that out. Your job is to make them all like him.

Well people stop and think about it. By saying that they plan on keeping Ratliff at NT, they are not divulging a draft strategy. If they were to come out and say that Ratliff would be moving to DE, then naturally, that would give some indication that the Cowboys plan on either drafting a DE opposite of Ratliff as well as an NT. So let's wait and see.

The trouble is other than the Taylor kid, the talent coming out at NT, at least for your standard 330lb NT, isn't so hot. I have questions about Taylor, but even more so for the best one ofter that... Jerrell Powe.

Not so sure about him staying at the NT position, but if Rob says he can play there then he can there.

I bet dollars to donuts (since we are talking about Rob) that Ratliff will get lined up all over the place. May end up saying NT next to his name on the website, but I'm sure Ryan has a plan in mind.

I believe this too, I think our defense will have different looks and disguises.

Ratliff still may line up at the end position at times.

Which is exactly how he should be used. NT on obvious passing downs and various places (LDE, RDE, NT)on normal downs.

He's an All-Pro player, so he will be fine.

Let's just improve our depth on the defense and let Ryan put the pieces in place.

Indeed. It will be nice if Brent develops into a guy that can play more snaps on the nose, give Ratliff breaks and let him move around.
