IRVING -- Jason Witten is one of Tony Romo's closest friends and supporters in the Cowboys locker room. But even Witten admitted Wednesday that Romo must be better in certain situations.
Romo helped a 27-3 third quarter lead evaporate Sunday against the Detroit Lions when he tossed three critical interceptions, including two that were returned for touchdowns.
"He needs to play better in those situations, as far as those situations go, but he's made a lot of plays for us," Witten said. "There's not a mindset of questioning him in any way. I think we all know that he's our guy and we all got to do a better job, too."
The Cowboys quarterback also struggled in the fourth quarter of the season opener, fumbling near the goal line and throwing an interception. Both of those mistakes resulted in the Cowboys squandering a 24-10 fourth-quarter lead.
However, Romo bounced back from that loss, leading the Cowboys to victories over San Francisco and Washington despite a broken rib.
Witten was asked Wednesday if Romo feels like he has something to prove after a loss that, simialr to the Week 1 defeat, has caused many to be critical of his second half blunders.
"I'm sure he does," the tight end responded, "but hey, he's been in it long enough. He understands the mentality, the journey that you're on when you're in that position.
