Jason Witten doesn't talk after tough day

September, 23, 2012

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas – Words apparently can’t describe how Jason Witten feels after playing what could be described as the worst game of his potential Hall of Fame career for the second consecutive week.

Witten didn’t make himself available to the media after the Cowboys’ 16-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, exiting the locker room through a back door as the postgame access period opened and sending a member of the team’s equipment staff to get his clothes from his locker.

Witten’s stat line: two catches for 8 yards, two false start penalties, one sack allowed and two or three drops, depending on how harsh one wants to judge on one ball thrown high and behind him over the middle.

Witten has served as a stand-up spokesman throughout his 10-year career with the Cowboys. That included last week, when the tight end made no excuses after his three-drop performance in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The last time Witten didn’t talk after a game was following the Cowboys’ win over the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 23, 2008, when he took a vicious hit to his already broken ribs. That game is best remembered for Terrell Owens being “unleashed” for 213 receiving yards days after he criticized Jason Garrett’s play-calling.

They just need to sit him down. He is obviously not right and he is really hurting the offense with the drops, penalties and poor blocking right now.

umm he needs to keep playing and get back in rhythm, sitting him seems backwards to fix what is bothering him.

What if its an injury thats causing his awfulness

i think the injury and all that missed time in practice everyday is what caused it. he is just working himself back into being himself and the drops just seem mental because of physical limitations.

I find it repulsive by the way how quickly the fans turn on our players. Its pretty sorry. Witten has been nothing but outstanding for a decade playing with every injury known to man and now he is in a tough spot for a couple of reasons and he is fighting through it and the fans want to bail on him. Shame on them.

Even with his struggles he has still moved the chains on some important and difficult plays.

Brad Sham called the cowboys fans front runners and eluded to the fan base just dismissing players from week to week yesterday I am pretty sure he is referring to the way witten is being talked about.

I bet witten is just fine after the bye.

There is no doubt that I believe he will be fine and I am not for sitting him down. I think his injuries and missed practice have hurt him considerably

Nate Newton said he thought he got hurt again early in the Seattle game and I thought so too. He tried to hide it but it looked like he was in serious pain when he went up and got blasted in the back. And he said we should sit him for a couple weeks too, not because he's turned on him, but for Witten's own good. As tough as he is, if it's affecting him this much, he must really, really be injured and it would probably be best for him to get healthier before he plays.

That could be true. But the trainers and the coaches keep saying he is not hurt. He said last week he is fine.

Rocket Ismail said its his timing because he missed so much camp, said it happened to him in Carolina after missing 4 weeks in camp. Said he couldn't catch or find his rhythm for about a month after returning. Everything was off.

I'm glad he decided to STFU. His constant "we aren't the same team" bullshit is getting old.

Id rather see it than here it.

It isnt missed practice time causing the drops, its lack of concetrations from either 1) hurting so bad when he reaches or 2) really worried about what a 2nd hit to the same injured area will do or 3) both

Jason Witten fails to offer excuses for recent play: ‘I’m just not making the play when I need to’
By Barry Horn / Reporter
9:22 pm on September 24, 2012

IRVING — Jason Witten stood in front of his Valley Ranch locker Monday, offering no excuses for his subpar performance against Tampa Bay, which came on the heels of a similar effort against Seattle.

“Ultimately, for me, I’ve been in the right spot. I’m just not making the play when I need to,” Witten said.

Witten uncharacteristically did not answer questions after Sunday’s 16-10 victory over Tampa Bay, in which he caught two passes for 8 yards and dropped three passes.

Witten, 30, suffered a lacerated spleen during preseason on Aug. 13 against Oakland. He returned four weeks later for the regular-season opener against the New York Giants but has not looked like the tight end who came into the season with 696 receptions for 7,909 and 41 touchdowns in nine seasons. He has caught eight passes for 76 yards in the Cowboys’ first three games. In 2011, he had 19 receptions for 272 yards through three games.

Witten maintained that his spleen has “healed” and is not an issue.

“I take full responsibility for [the dropped passes], and rest assured that I’m going to get it fixed,” Witten said. “I wish there was a way I could say I wasn’t feeling good or I’m pressing or anything like that. It’s not that. That would be the easy way to really get out of it. Bottom line is you got to get it fixed, it’s unacceptable.”

On Sunday’s broadcast, Fox analyst Troy Aikman said Witten was still suffering with health problems.

“I appreciate him looking out for me,” Witten said, insisting again he is 100 percent.

Coach Jason Garrett expressed confidence Witten will return to form.

“[He] is one of the best football players I have ever been around,” Garrett said. “I believe he is working his way back to form.”
