Jason Williams out and maybe Shawn Merriman in?
The Cowboys just cut 2009 third round draft pick LB Jason Williams, read here.
The Cowboys' 2009 draft looks worse by the week.
They announced the release of linebacker Jason Williams on Tuesday. Williams, the 69th overall pick in the draft, was the Cowboys' top draft pick in the class after they traded down.
Williams is the third member of that draft class released in the last month. The Cowboys cut fifth-round safety Michael Hamlin and third-round offensive tackle Robert Brewster in October.
Only four players from the 12-player class remain on the roster: fourth-round quarterback Stephen McGee, fourth-round outside linebackers Victor Butler and Brandon Williams and fifth-round kicker David Buehler. (The best player in the class, sixth-round tight end John Phillips, is on injured reserve.)
The Cowboys could opt to promote cornerback Bryan McCann off the practice squad to fill the open roster spot. The Cowboys have only three cornerbacks on the roster, and Terence Newman might not be able to play Sunday against the Packers due to a painful strained muscle in his rib cage.
Hate to be the guy who barks out 'I told you so' but I did. The kid had no instincts to play the Inside Linebacker spot. If anything he was a 'see ball, go get ball LB' who should have been in a 43 as a WLB or added some bulk and just been a situational pass rusher which could take advantage of his speed.
And you see that last part about adding Bryan McCann? This move should have been made last week heading into the Jags game. Terence Newman was in no shape to be playing last Sunday. The first play in the game where he saw any contact you could tell he was not ready for a game. But as any player would do he told Wade he was playing and that's that.
Wade is the head coach. He should have told Newman he was going to sit this one out because having a player out there who isn't ready to go will only hurt the team. Instead Wade did what he always does and didn't want to be confrontational so he just backed down to Newman.
As for Shawn Merriman. The Chargers are going to waive him today. The Cowboys pass rush is weak these days and Anthony Spencer is not getting the job done. Bring in Merriman and kick the tires for the next nine games. Even if the injuries to Merriman have left him only as a marginal player it should light a fire under Spencer. Plus Merriman has some attitude and right now this defense has none.
