IRVING, Texas -- Five days after Jason Garrett was named the Cowboys’ head coach in January he interviewed Vic Fangio for the defensive coordinator vacancy.
Garrett eventually hired Rob Ryan after Fangio decided to go with Jim Harbaugh from Stanford to San Francisco, and the two will rekindle a relationship that started in 1990 when Garrett was a practice squad quarterback in New Orleans and Fangio was an assistant on Sunday.
“I’ve known Vic for a long time and I consider him a friend,” Garrett said. “I think he’s one of the really gifted football minds that there is … We used to sit on the bus together and he used to tell me the ways of football and we’ve maintained a relationship for a long time. I have an immense amount of respect for him.”
