Jason Garrett isn't bored this offseason

With the NFL lockout in place, it's created some challenges for coaches.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett started his first-year as an interim coach, then when he got the job fulltime a lockout emerged and he is unable to speak with his players.

"So, what we have been trying to do as coaches is try to get everything ready for them when they do come back," said Garrett, who was honored for his charity work at the Pat Summerall Humble Beginnings Award Luncheon on Monday which raises money for the Austin Street Centre. "It starts with putting structure together for the offseason, for training camp, and then we have to be able to adjust that structure once we find out what the rules are. So we are still in a little bit of a holding pattern."

For a brief period during the draft, two weeks ago, players were allowed to visit Valley Ranch. The first day the lockout was lifted players were not allowed to use the weight room at Valley Ranch. But a day later, players were permitted to use the workout rooms and even first-round pick Tyron Smith was able to take a playbook home and get some classwork in with offensive line coach Hudson Houck.

With the lockout reinstated by the owners, coaches are doing various things to stay busy.

Garrett and the rest of his staff are looking at tape of the 2010 seasons in an attempt to fix some of the problems for a team that went 6-10.

"I don’t think you get bored because there are a lot of things to do," Garrett said. "You can do some of the things you typically do maybe a little bit better because you have a little bit extra time. But at the same time, we’re all excited to get our players back and get going."

I have no doubt we'll be one of the best prepared teams.

And last year we'd be one of the worst.

JG proved in 8 games last year that he knows how to prepare a team, and field a team that has a chance to win every week.
