Speculation on who the Cowboys should select will churn until the team is on the clock and makes its first-round pick.
But as you argue the merits of targeting a defensive end over a safety or a cornerback over a guard, as you search for bread crumbs that lead you to who the team intends to draft, keep in mind the player profile that has developed during Jason Garrett's brief tenure as head coach.
Talent is crucial to success, but it's just one component. There is discipline. There is passion. There is the sense that no matter what you accomplish, there is always something else to prove.
These qualities produce an edge the Cowboys have too often lacked in recent years. These are traits the Cowboys will discuss as they put their draft board together.
"I think you can make a compelling argument that America is a meritocracy, so if you do things the right way, you're going to succeed in this country,'' Garrett said. "And I think you can make an argument that the best teams do things that way.
"You try not to entitle people. Hopefully they earn their job, they earn their position because of what they do.''
