The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired longtime head coach Jack Del Rio, a team source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.

Del Rio informed his coaching staff of the decision on Tuesday, according to the source. He told them that Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver has ideas about how to proceed, but Del Rio was uncertain who would replace him.

A source told NFL Network's Albert Breer that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will take over as interim head coach. Tucker joined the Jaguars in 2009 following four seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns. Breer said the Jaguars have a news conference scheduled for noon ET.

The second head coach in team history, Del Rio's job security had been tenuous since Weaver said the coach needed to make the playoffs this year to secure a 10th season in Jacksonville. The Jaguars were essentially eliminated with Sunday's 20-13 loss to Houston.

Following the game Weaver was asked if a decision had been made on Del Rio's coaching future.

"Now is not the time," Weaver said Sunday. "That's for another day."

The Jaguars, who are struggling to sell tickets, host a Monday night game against San Diego.

Hired by the Jaguars in 2003, Del Rio finishes his career in Jacksonville with a 69-73 overall record, including a 1-2 mark in the postseason. His team hasn't made the playoffs since 2007, when Jacksonville finished 11-5 and qualified as a wild card.

The Jaguars didn't win the AFC South in any of his nine seasons.

Weaver considered firing Del Rio after last season, but kept him partly because of the uncertainty surrounding the NFL lockout.

There is an outside chance that del rio could end up on a staff with fisher in charge in Philly if something were done to Reid.

He will get a job quickly from someone.

He's a good coach. I would take him on our staff in some capacity.

I imagine he would have a job waiting for him with fisher somewhere or with mike smith in atlanta if he wants it next year.

He has lots of ties around the league. It would be bizarre to have another former player coaching here though.

I was wondering when Jack "of the River" would be fired. They've sucked every year under him.

They did not suck every year he was with them. He was limited at QB his entire time there. Not saying he did not deserve to get fired, but he did put together some solid years there.

He's not a good HC imo...Just a Jack Ass who should have been fired years ago.

Even though he's young he'll never get a NFL HC job again...

I think Del Rio would be a very good college coach...I thought USC might be the spot for him, but Kiffin had a solid year there.

True.

And Gabbert seems to be falling in line with that tradition. He's a rookie but he's got a long ways to go be considered a serviceable QB.

Vince Lombardi couldn't win in Jacksonville.

That's a hapless franchise.

The NFL should retract them, and one of the Ohio teams (prefferably the Bengals) and the NFL would be better because of it.

I though Gabbert would be better than this. Now he does not have shit to throw too, but that does not excuse being so inaccurate.

I thought he would be better as well but he has been deplorable in the few games I watched. As of a week ago he was the lowest ranked QB in the league out of all the starters that qualified. Can't see how that changed after his dreadful performance Sunday.

Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver will put his Jacksonville franchise up for sale, according to a league source.

The source also said Weaver wants the team to stay in Jacksonville, Fla. Weaver is expected to address the sale during a Tuesday news conference at noon ET.

Pakistani-born entrepreneur and auto-parts mogul Shahid Khan will buy the franchise, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The sale would be subject to league approval, but the process already is underway.

The news of the team's sale comes on the heels of coach Jack Del Rio's firing after eight-plus seasons with the team.

Kahn told Sports Illustrated he intends to keep the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Kahn lost out on an attempt to buy the St. Louis Rams when Stan Kroenke bought the team in 2010.

In other Jaguars news, general manager Gene Smith has received a three-year contract extension, according to a league source
