Bengals could be trading Keith Rivers to Giants

Posted by Mike Florio on April 11, 2012, 8:50 AM EDT

As we try to muddle through the lull between free agency and the full-throttle ramping up of interest in the draft, there’s nothing like a trade rumor to keep things interesting.

From Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger comes word of murmurs that the Giants may be acquiring linebacker Keith Rivers from the Bengals.

The ninth pick in the 2008 draft, Rivers missed all of 2011 with a wrist injury. He also missed nine games as a rookie after getting blown up by Hines Ward. (Rivers at least got a vote for AP defensive rookie of the year, despite appearing in only seven games.) For the two seasons in between, Rivers started 13 games in 2009 and 13 games in 2010.

As Garafolo points out, the return of Manny Lawson and the presence of Thomas Howard make Rivers expendable in Cincinnati. The Giants, in turn, need linebackers — even though they’d have to do some shuffling if Rivers would be brought in to play the weak side.

The bigger question will be compensation. Last month, the Eagles secured Pro Bowl middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans from the Texans for a fourth-round pick and flip-flopping of third-rounder choices. Rivers has a better draft pedigree but less of a career than Ryans. The Bengals may not get much, if they indeed will be moving on by moving Rivers out.

Talented linebacker when healthy. Just hasn't been healthy.

Deal should be done by end of day, based on twitter buzz.

Hines Ward TKO'd Rivers with a broken jaw and he's has a history of foot, calf and wrist injuries. The later knocking him out for the year last season. This scrub is would be the least of our worries if he became a Giant. If anything we should pray for him to sign with them.

He's a decent coverage linebacker. And while he may have been injury prone in the past, he's still a first round talent.

Not to mention, the Giants will likely only give up something ridiculous like a 5th.

I hope it's a nothing trade, but the risk/reward so clearly favors the Giants here. Almost like the Ryan trade the Eagles made last month.

Per @TheBlueScreen, the #Giants will be trading the #Bengals their 5th-round pick in the 2012 draft for LB Keith Rivers.

I wish we could get a starter for a 5th round pick.

Rivers broke his jaw getting tackled while running back an interception and had a foot injury.

He's only 25 and was the 9th overall player picked. If he's healthy the Giants just stole a player.

I like how when the Eagles or Giants trade for a quality player (Ryans or Rivers) or the Redskins move up to secure a franchise QB in RGIII, they are all bad moves but every JAG we sign... Livings, Bernadeau, Pool... are all quality moves and the coaches must see something in them.

Bengals Linebacker Keith Rivers Season Is Over: Placed On The Reserve/Non-Football Injury List

Cincinnati Bengals outside linebacker Keith Rivers was finally placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, announced the team on Tuesday, without participating in a single game this season -- which is similar to Injured Reserve. When Rivers arrived in training camp this season, he surprised many (at least the media and fans) after recently under-going wrist surgery that was originally expected to keep him out through September. The surgery was later described by one team source as a "rebuilding of the wrist."

After sitting on the Active/Non-Football Injury list throughout preseason, Rivers was placed on the Reserve/NFI list at the start of the regular season, opening a spot on the 53-man roster, though making him ineligible through the first six weeks into the 2011 regular season. After being granted an exception to rejoin the team earlier this month, the Bengals were forced to make a decision by Tuesday's deadline -- place him on the 53-man roster, Injured Reserve or releasing him through an injury settlement.

This won't be the first time Rivers' season will end with an injury. In 2008 the Bengals ninth overall draft pick suffered a broken jaw during week seven against the Pittsburgh Steelers, ending a rookie season where he lead the team with 51 tackles.

Bengals trade Keith Rivers to Giants for fifth-round pick
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 11, 2012, 3:17 PM EDT

The anticipated trade of Keith Rivers from Cincinnati to New York is done, and Rivers is a Giant.

The Giants traded a fifth-round pick in this month’s NFL draft to the Bengals for Rivers, NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports.

Rivers became expendable when the Bengals re-signed Manny Lawson last week, and they probably would have taken whatever they could get for him. For the Bengals, adding any draft pick for a player who wasn’t in their plans is a good move.

It could also be a good move for the Giants if Rivers is ever able to stay healthy and fulfill the promise he showed when the Bengals took him with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 draft. Rivers has always been a starter when healthy, but he missed 13 games in his first three seasons with various injuries and then missed the entire 2011 season with a wrist injury.

The fifth-round pick the Bengals acquired is the 167th overall pick. Cincinnati will pick three times late in the fifth round: They also have their own fifth-round pick (No. 156) and the Patriots’ fifth-round pick (No. 166).

Is there a starting Center we can trade a 5th rounder for? How about a quality 3rd WR for a 6th rounder?

We only seem to overpay in trades. I wonder why?
