It’s safe to say Mike Shanahan’s honeymoon period is over

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 5, 2011, 1:03 PM EDT

While reading through Florio’s breakdown of a possible Donovan McNabb trade and the column from Jason Reid of the Washington Post that inspired it, we couldn’t help but have one takeaway:

Mike Shanahan has used up most of the goodwill and trust he came to Washington with as a two-time Super Bowl champion.

After Washington’s opening week win last year, local columnists took turns saying that this fresh start felt different. That feeling didn’t last throughout a tumultuous 2010 where Shanahan the coach was again undone by Shanahan the personnel guy.

Here’s the open to Reid’s column Monday:

“The NFL lockout has resulted in one positive development for Washington Redskins fans: At least Coach Mike Shanahan couldn’t do more damage to the team. He was unable to approve another disastrous trade. He was forbidden from tinkering with a Redskins defense he significantly weakened before last season,” Reid writes.

Boom. Roasted.

We don’t disagree with anything Reid writes. Shanahan has a long track record of questionable personnel decisions. There is a feeling in Washington that things are better than they were under Vinny Cerrato, which is true. That doesn’t mean they are headed in the right direction.

We get the sense that Redskins fans give Shanahan a long leash, and trust he’ll turn things around. The question is whether Dan Snyder feels the same way.

If Washington bottoms out this year — and there is every reason to think they will based on their roster — it’s fair to wonder whether Snyder will be patient enough to see Shanahan’s vision through.

Never liked the hiring in the first place. Young cordinators is where it's at right now and it has also been proven to work. When you bring in a head coach who is an entity onto himself with a team that needs to be blown up, have its remains insinerated and dropped where they dumped megatron in Transformers 1, it's not going to work. Hopefully if he fails, he fails magnificantly. In which case, show him the door, hire Winston Moss from the Packers and if I'm not mistaken there's a QB from Stanford that's supposed to be pretty good.

It can work.

Parcells came in here and immediately turned around a God awful team. We contend with his core today.

You have to give Shanny a few seasons. What Washington can't do is another knee jerk and change directions. That franchise desperately needs some stability and a clear defined vision.

Shannahan ran a circus last season.. please don't compare him to BP. Nothing like that has ever happened to one of BP's teams. That environment he created in DC last year was a complete joke. He and his son.

I don't think he created any circus environment in D.C. I think that was present long before he got there.

I'd give him a couple more years. The key will be finding the personnel. The guy can coach.

He's not that great a coach imo. I'd give him one more year there and if nothing changes.. ship him out. Year one was enough of an embarassment already.

He hasnt done much in a long, long time. In his hay-day he was an outstanding offensive mind, but I think that time has come and gone. I suspect this will be his last yr as a HC in the NFL. They are going to finish last and are going to struggle to win 4 or 5 games.

You can't judge Shanny until he gets a quarterback. It's a QB driven league.

I'm still not sure I understand their decision to pass on Gabbert.

Actually, you can't judge Shanahan until he finds another Terrell Davis and chop blocking linemen.

LOL, I completley forgot that this rat turd coaches the sorryass Deadskins.

I hope to all God that that shitty ass coach and team stay shitty for years, and years to come.
