With the ever changing face of technology these days, consumers are now caught between computers, phones and all sorts of tablets in between. There was a day when Microsoft led the way and over time accomplished Bill Gates simple mission statement of “a personal computer on every desk and in every home”. (reference)

While the PC isn’t “dead” yet it is on life support and losing ground to more mobile platforms such as the iPad and Android. In fact, tablet sales accounted for 1/3 of the global computer sales during the 4th quarter of 2012.

(reference) In fact, sales of PC’s across the globe has fallen 14% in the first 2 months of this year, hitting its biggest fall since the IDC started tracking the industry in 1994. (reference) Adding that leading processor manufacturer foresees a Q2 sales decline as much as 8%, they’re trimming their own spending plans because of the drop in PC sales due to the growing popularity of tablets and smartphones. Until tablets and phones can do everything a PC can, PCs will be in demand. Btw, are laptops considered PCs?

yep to a large degree.

last year i took pics for my nephews wedding and when i edited them up, i put them on a zip file for him to download. only he and his wife (both early 20s) had no PC, just smartphones. of course everyone here has a PC. we've had 'em for decades and it's just how we get things done. but is the shift going another way? i can't picture myself w/o a PC anymore than a kid can picture themselves w/o a smartphone.

like the article said, i'd not write war and peace on a phone TODAY. but what if we get to the point to where a phone has 16gig of RAM and a 500gig SSD and still as small as an iphone is today. could you "doc" that into a station with larger screens and a keyboard like you do laptops?

I like my smart phone, but some things I just am more comfortable/familiar with on my PC.
I can forsee the day when mobile devices are the norm, though.
Of course Skynet will have taken over by then anyway.

i don't do much on smartphones but txt and get my e-mail. oh, and talk. but the generation growing up this is about all they use. they look at PC's as something their dad has they don't need.

then again i think cloud computing is marketing, not a real solution.

Every post that I have made on these Cowboy forums in the last
year has been from my phone. It is a pain in the ass sometimes, but it is handy.

I still prefer PCs over tablets and smart phones. That may change in the next few years, but for now they aren't dead to me.

Funny how it is something Dad uses until they need it for homework or a resume.

A good typing device with a reasonably easy to view screen will never go out of fashion.

My six year old autistic nephew decided to edit some Wikipedia pages the other day. He is a brilliant but different kid. It started on the Angry Birds pages and escalated.

Personally I have tried to embrace cloud computing, but I have issues with the security aspect. I love my Smart phone and Ipad but they have not replaced my PC yet. Far to many limitation and far to many big brothers recording every move.

Stupid question.

Please enlight us.
We,beings of lower education level unlike yourself fail to comprehend how a technology inquiry becomes a stupid question.
And please, after completing the education of us,you master of all science, can you please explain how a community of thoughtless brutes like the rest of us managed to develop a certain skill set that allow us to successfully gain our sustenance, acquire a comfortable lifestyle and operate sophisticated techno artifacts with a minimal failure rate?

I'm waiting.

I mean, let's think about the practicalness of this. I'm not going to start using my cell phone to start logging in to message boards. I've been doing that for over 10 years. Anyway, I have to go make sure a group of undocumented workers are getting it done on a project I'm overseeing.
