Is Miles Austin a top-five receiver?
September, 23, 2010 Sep 2310:09AM CTEmail Print Comments By Tim MacMahon

IRVING, Texas – A great media debate at Valley Ranch yesterday was whether Miles Austin ranked as one of the NFL’s top five receivers.

I argued that Austin belonged in that elite class. It’s a pretty easy case to make when you consider yards and touchdowns.

Austin’s 1,608 receiving yards since the start of last season rank second in the NFL in that span. His 12 touchdowns are tied for fourth.

Houston’s Andre Johnson, the only receiver with more yards since the start of the 2009 season, is one of the receivers I conceded was better than Austin. You’ll get no argument from Austin on that point.

“He catches the ball great,” Austin said. “He runs hard. He’s fast. He’s a tough, tough receiver. He’s everything that you want in a receiver.”

Austin’s self-evaluation: “I’m trying to be all those things.”

No.

Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, DeSean Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Marshall, Steve Smith, Roddy White, Calvin Johnson, Hakeem Nicks.

I'd take all of them over Austin. I think they're all more talented. He's right outside the top 10 for me.

Of course his production over the last year has been top 5 worthy, but that factors in supporting cast, offense pass/run ratio and the fact that teams haven't defended Austin like a true 1.

I'd put my money on Dez cracking the top 5 over Austin.

I have him around the 5 mark, and I think it's fair.

He's got a combination of size, speed, and route running that's just hard to defend.

Close there's a lot more WR's out there that i would want before Miles's like, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Brandon Marshall.

"I'd put my money on Dez cracking the top 5 over Austin". (sbk92) agree with you here.:thumbsup

Hakeem Nicks is more of a projection for me. I think he's gonna be a top tier stud. He's already really good.

There's not a more dangerous WR in the game than Jackson. Smith is a big play waiting to happen.

I might put Crabtree over Austin. Dez too. But they aren't better right now.
