Old core

Romo
Ware
Witten
Rat
Bradie
Newman

Is it time to start looking past these players and developing a new core of players?

Smith
Lee
Murray
Dez? - highly questionable
Carter - hopefully he pans out

Thats an OK start...maybe a draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round to eventually replace Romo to create a new core of players

*** I hope I dont get bant for this...this is trolling on other boards

We already are. Bradie has been marginalized to the point where he rarely plays unless we're playing the Giants for some reason, then he gets to play and get exposed. Newman will be on the way out, I think he showed himself the door. Rat is declining and will be further marginalized if we make him a DE. Fortunately the big three have shown no sign of slowing, but it is written verily that the pass rushers end comes swiftly as a thief in the night, noone but the Father knows the day and the hour. So who knows when Ware will slow down? Better not be soon.

I don't think there is any concerted effort to say "this is our new core, let's build around these players" though. While Romo's here, we're just churning the roster hoping for upgrades wherever we can find them.

but the building around is the issue with this team. We have as much "core talent" as anyone in the league. We are just completely unable to supplement it with JAGs who can step up when they have to.

After the first couple QBs, there's really nobody that interests me in this draft. I'd use this year to try restock the OL/DL/secondary. If the value is there, I'd consider a QB in 5-7. McGee just doesn't do it for me. I don't think he'll ever be more then a meh backup.

You can't build a consistent winning NFL team by replacing all of your "core guys" every few years. It has to be a revolving core so to speak. You have to add to the core every year, because it's always aging.

I wouldn't look towards replacing Romo now. I still think he has 4-5 years left, which is a career for some positions in the league.

This is who I'd consider to be the "core" of the team:

Tony Romo - obvious selection
DeMarcus Ware - obvious selection
Tyron Smith - Only played a year, but was exceptional. Move him to LT, and we're set for 10 years.
Sean Lee - See above. But don't move him to LT. Keep him at ILB instead.
Doug Free - I have to believe that he'll redeem himself with new coaching, and a return to RT.
Miles Austin - I think the lack of off season hurt him. Mick Woicik will help.
Danny McCray - Stud special teamer. One of the best in the league, IMO. Steve Tasker like ability.

Wow, I can't really think of anyone else to put on there.

My heart wants to put Dez on there, but clearly there's some maturation issues going on.

I feel like I should put DeMarco Murray on there, but I have serious reservations about his durability.

You could make a case for Dan Bailey, but really... can a kicker be considered part of the core?

Other than that, there's not a lot of guys on this roster who I feel are locks to be here for the next 5 years, and continue to be reliable contributors.

^^ Debating including Jenkins in that list. If he's who I think he is, this season will prove to him that he has the ability to be a reliable guy, just has to keep working.

We started doing that last year.

Now it's garret's turn to save this place and go have another good draft and findsome free agents.

Its a big offseason..

But the core per se, died when they lost to jax last year. It's been about changing as much as possible since then.

Idk if romo has that many years left. His arm strength isn't great already and in a few years he won't be able to make throws he used to. We already dont have a great deep ball.

(I know our deep throw % is tops in the league Adam, it's not what I mean)
