Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, known for his Super Bowl predictions, made a mention of the “SB” word Thursday. It was followed by a long pause and a wide smile as he waited for reporters to catch on to the fact that he was joking.

“But I do think we’ve taken steps to improve our team,” Jones said. “We are a better team -- there’s no question in my mind -- than we were at this same time last year. We’ve got a lot of work to do to compete in the very first ball game. We’ve got a formidable opponent and that’s exactly the way we’ll approach this thing and it won’t be about the goals at the end of the year as much as it is how we prepare ourselves to be ready to play the Giants [in the season opener].”

The Cowboys are only 22-26 over the last three seasons and have not made the playoffs since 2009. Jones had promised to make it uncomfortable in the offseason after a second consecutive 8-8 campaign, and to that end, the Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin to run the defense and turned over playcalling duties to Bill Callahan.

Though the Cowboys’ expectations are high, coach Jason Garrett remains steady in banging the day-to-day “process” drum.

“I think every coach and player in the National Football League is excited about going to training camp,” Garrett said. “[The Super Bowl] is the goal for all of us. We’re excited to get there. There’s a lot of work to do, and what we try to do is focus each and every day and get on that path and do things the right way. We feel like we have the right kind of guys on our staff; we feel like we have the right kind of guys on our football team. It’s time to go to work.”

I think it's playoff win or bust for Jason. If we lose in the 2nd round and get blown out, he could get the boot.

We haven't played in a Super Bowl since 1996.

What GM has made it through the draft and free agency and doesn't think their team has improved?

Fuck, even the Jags are probably looking at improvement.

Yeah, that was the last time we played in one too.

But we're lucky, remember.

I don't know what "bust" is supposed to mean in this context.

Jerry wouldn't get rid of vets like Romo, Witten, Ware, etc. There will be no "cleaning house" of players.
Jerry certainly wouldn't fire the GM and bring in a whole new front office.
At the most, Jerry might replace six coaches or so ... including the head coach.

Jerry isn't going to blow things up. That's only happened once in franchise history -- shortly after Jerry bought the team.

They "bust" every year from expectations. Then JJ waits a few weeks before firing some assistant to the assistant of the assistant LBs coach, and promptly calls it a successful offseason.

Meanwhile, the homers start getting excited. Talking about "yeah, he may have just been the assistant to the assistant's assistant, but that assistant actually worked for an assistant who's cousin once served brunch to Bill Belichick's housekeeper...and we all know how great Belichick is at coaching. Garrett and Ciskowski really struck gold this time."

Yeah, the Homers are delusional. As long as they aren't jerks about it, it doesn't bother me much.

We are all just coping with the same crap (nearly 20 years since the championship, a team that manages to lose in the most excruciating of ways, Jerry, etc.). It is enough to drive any serious fan half crazy.

I don't see how rational people can so easily abandon reality and say "this year might be the year".

Yeah, it might. And I might stumble onto a naked and horny Kate Upton some day as I a stroll through the park.

Everyone wants the team to win but I just don't see how people can ignore facts and pin their hopes on the "one in a million" happening.

Once Jerry finally dies our odds of winning will go up, but his retarded son who hands out ridiculous contracts will take over. Our chances won't go up by much.
