For the first time this season, the Dallas Cowboys scored on their opening possession: a four-yard pass from quarterback Tony Romo to tight end Jason Witten.

The Cowboys entered play as one of only six NFL teams that had not scored a point in their first possession this season. The remaining slow starters are Arizona , Cincinnati, Denver , Minnesota and the New York Giants.

The first quarter had not been kind to the Cowboys. In the previous five games, they had been outscored by 13 points in the quarter. They led, 10-7, after the opening quarter of this game.

The Cowboys had a season-high five takeaways and were a plus-3 for turnovers on Monday night and still lost to the New York Giants. That does not compute, according to the statistical trends.

For the season, teams are 48-18 in games with three-plus takeaways. That the Cowboys lost despite being a plus-3 in turnovers went against a league-wide trend. For the season, teams that are plus-3 or better in turnovers are 11-2. The only other team to have lost in this situation is winless Buffalo.
