IRVING — On a day when a tight hamstring kept Miles Austin out of practice and underscored how little experience the Cowboys have at wide receiver, a reminder of why this hadn’t been a concern in recent years was across the practice field.

Patrick Crayton was at Valley Ranch on Thursday. The receiver who spent the first six seasons of his career with the Cowboys was back one year after the trade that sent him to the Chargers.

Crayton was considered a luxury for the Cowboys last season after the club spent a first-round pick on Dez Bryant . He wouldn’t be a luxury now. Once you get past Austin and Bryant, the most experienced NFL receiver is Kevin Ogletree with 10 receptions. Manny Johnson has one. No other receiver has caught a pass in a regular-season game.

That inexperience could encourage the Cowboys to scour the waiver wire for a veteran receiver in coming weeks.

“Hey, I don’t know what to tell them,” Crayton said. “I won’t be available.”

Good point. The Chargers aren’t about to let Crayton go anywhere.

“Patrick was a very good player for us here, a very versatile guy,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s a smart guy. He’s tough, a guy you can put in any situation and he seemed to come up and make plays.”

Crayton called his time with the Cowboys wonderful and said there were no hard feelings over his departure. He said he was grateful to owner Jerry Jones and his family for his time with the club.

And what about the assertion that the club has been unable to find a replacement for Crayton?

“They replaced me,” he said. “How many [receivers] dress for the team each game? Five. Six.

“Yeah, I’ve been replaced.”

I wouldn't want Crayton back even if he was available.

He thinks he's a media darling like TO.

This is why you don't trade for and extend pieces of shit like Roy Williams. We could still have Crayton on the team.

What's even left for veteran receivers? If they were going to make this decision they should have done it sooner...

You still have training camp cuts, Mav.

But there's not a guy out there I'm interested in. And I don't think I'll be interested in anyone that doesn't make a roster.

Maybe Donte Stallworth when the Skins cut him - just because he's a former Vol and I like his speed.

Pretty sure you were egging for a trade of RW before it happened. 90+% of CZ were all supporting trading for RW (or Boldin, or some other guy)

They played it right. You give all the time you can to the young guys you have if you think they can develop, and then if they dont you sign a veteran guy. There's definitely going to be several hit the streets at final cut downs, and several might be available via trade.

I was, but then right after we extended him I said I didn't like that idea because he hadn't done anything to warrant one with us.

I dont think anybody thought he'd be as bad he was here. He was never that awful in Detroit, and Romo and the surrounding guys here were far better than what he had up there. Plus he really wanted to be here. I'm still stunned he was so mediocre here.

That's why you don't extend players soon after you trade for them unless they are certified All-Pros.

Got a feeling that Murray will see a lot of slot action in some packages. Hopefully he can be used as a Reggie Bush type.

I think this was probably part of their thought process in drafting him, but he's way behind. He's gotta get out there soon otherwise his rookie yr might end up being more of a redshirt season.

I'm not sure Stallworth gets cut, at least not right away. They still haven't given Malcolm Kelly the boot yet, have they?

The more I think about it, the third receiver is most important for depth in case Austin or Dez misses time. Witten's gets the looks a third wideout would get most of the time. A training camp cut from another team would be ok, depending on the player. Between that guy and Ogletree getting a little more time to develop during the deal this should be fine, as long as no injuries persist.
