Figured this was worth pointing out as we enter the meat of the offseason (late spring, post-draft): as technically a first-year head coach, Jason Garrett would normally be permitted by the NFL to schedule an extra team minicamp in the spring/early summer. That would be particularly beneficial for the defense under new coordinator Rob Ryan.
Of course, that's not allowed right now under the current lockout rules. Official player workouts of any kind are barred, which is why Tony Romo and some 40-plus teammates began working out last week away from team supervision at an undisclosed location.
By this time of year (the weekend after the draft), the Cowboys normally conduct their rookie minicamp. Their OTA's (organized team activities) typically start in mid- to late-May, with a full team minicamp at the start of June.
Nothing yet. So it's not surprising that Romo's trying to rally the troops somewhere that's not Valley Ranch.
