Judging by the flurry of activity at Valley Ranch on Friday evening, it would seem that reports are accurate and the Cowboys are closing in on Rob Ryan as their next defensive coordinator.
For a unit that took on a severe lack of confidence for stretches of the 2010 season, Ryan's braggodocio could be a very good thing. Just like his brother in New York and his dad, the former coach of Philadelphia and Arizona, Ryan exudes cockiness in himself and his players.
As the NFL warned playoff teams not to get too carried away with the trash talk that has escalated this week, the possibility of Ryan joining the Cowboys gives reason to believe they might be able to take on a little swagger themselves.
As the Cleveland Plain-Dealer shows in their top 10 Ryan quotes of 2010, Ryan can definitely talk the talk.
That might be a good place to start with the Cowboys defense.

Browns' Rob Ryan: Top 10 quotes of 2010
By Craig Lyndall
Rob Ryan's press conferences may have been a silver lining to the 2010 Browns season
With his brash personality and fiery, competitive attitude, Rob Ryan is currently the most popular football coach in Cleveland.
Okay, we will admit that the foul mouth probably doesn’t hurt either.
While there were skeptics when Ryan was hired out of Oakland, the basis was mostly due to his relatively exotic tenure. The dysfunction between Art Shell, Lane Kiffin and the Raiders’ infamous owner Al Davis was so great that attempting to draw correlation between Ryan’s abilities and the results on the field proved problematic. Once he landed in Cleveland, it didn't take Browns fans long to embrace their defensive coordinator, in both good times and bad.
As Rob Ryan’s future in Cleveland is now up in the air, we thought we would make sure to document the place where Rob Ryan shines most: press conferences.
Obviously, everyone knows the hijinx that occurred when Rob and his twin brother Rex went toe-to-toe (or, belly-to-belly) prior to the Browns game against the New York Jets. Rex wore a long wig to with a pillow under his shirt to mock his brother, and Rob got a belt to mock his brother’s recent gastric bypass surgery. But what else has Rob said this year that might have slipped under the radar?
Here are some of the highlights:
10) One thing about Rob Ryan is that he doesn’t lack for confidence. When the rumors started swirling about the Browns coaches potentially losing their jobs, Ryan had Mangini’s back as well as his own.
“There are a lot of things you can throw away, but if they bring somebody else in on defense good luck because he isn’t nearly going to be as good as I am. As a head coach, I really believe Eric is a tremendous coach and this team believes in him... Is he the poster boy of pretty boy coaches? He’s good looking. He lost a lot of weight. The guy is handsome. I know one thing. He is a great coach. We have got a great team here. If they break it up, I’m not going to farm anybody’s land, but that would be dumb as (heck).”
9) Ryan doesn’t believe his skills are just limited to defense, provided you give him players. When talking about Cam Cameron, offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, Ryan had the following to say:
“Well, they got a ton of players. They've got Mason out there and they’ve got Boldin, they got this Houshmandzadeh, Heap when he’s healthy and Ray Rice. I mean, I might be able to call some offensive plays too.”
8) Speaking of players, Rob Ryan was running out of bodies by the end of the season and the media asked him if it was tough to deal with.
“Yes, but that’s the Cleveland way. Whoever we’ve got, man we’re going to play. We’ve got good, tough guys, we really do. They just line up and sometimes you’ve got to check the roster to find out their names. Please don’t ask me to pronounce that new guy that we got, but we’ve got tough guys.”
7) When some alleged foot fetish videos involving his brother surfaced, Rob Ryan was asked if he would comment. The Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot found herself in the comical crosshairs.
“I love (Rex) to death. Whatever happened, that’s between him and Mickey. Whatever. That’s the way it is. Screw it. I don’t think all of us have wings on, except maybe Mary Kay.”
6) Someone get this guy a calendar - preferably with 365 Fridays, the day in which coordinators speak to the media.
"Someone just told me we’re in December. The great thing is in the NFL, December it’s always the toughest guys win and the best coaches win so (shoot) we’re going to be great. Our defense is as tough as there is, our players are tough and we got the best coaches so we’re looking forward to this month.”
5) Think Rob Ryan cares about his pending fate? Take it away, modest Rob!
"I’m sure there are other people nervous but I’m not a guy that’s nervous, not anymore. When I first got in the league I’d be scared (senseless) but not now. Now it’s like please, there is nobody better. I don’t care."
4) When rookie safety TJ Ward was being chastised for his penalty-inducing hit on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley, Ryan was one of his guy's biggest supporters.
"He made a great read, he was in double coverage away from the ball, the man went outside and came back inside and went to knock the (heck) out of the guy on third down in the red zone and that’s how we teach. You teach to hit them properly, the young man didn’t lead with his head, he’s hitting him the way we teach him and then there’s a big hullabaloo about this penalty but (heck) those guys need to shut up. This is our team, they don’t coach our team. We do."
3) Back with more brother Rex stories. This time Rob talks about a little scuffle that took place back in 1985, complete with a bit of advice for the "kids at home."
"I don’t know how he never got hit in the deal. If I had to do it all over again, I would have hit him. The big detail that’s being left out is I had him down early. I had Rex down early, I got a good shot in there and he had a black eye too. There are some false reports there, he had a black eye. The biggest thing there for you kids at home, once you get a guy down early don’t feel sorry for him and let him up. Apparently they will come back swinging. It’s a cute story.
"It was just one of those deals, a typical Ryan day. I can’t go into too many details, maybe over a couple of beers one night. It’s just something that happens once in awhile. Usually there’s alcohol involved, he was engaged, I wasn’t and I wanted to be a team player. I don’t know what happened after that, so I’m going to let that go.”
2) While the world was still catching on to how good of a running back Peyton Hillis was, Ryan says that he was well-aware of the bruising back due to his tenure in the AFC West. With a chock full of comparisons, Ryan even goes as far as harnessing a classic childhood game.
"Larry Csonka back in the day. Earl Campbell, when he was running with those tear-away jerseys. We played him when he was at Denver and I saw him do some things to some opponents that made me shake my head.
I believe Eric (Mangini) was playing him the next week so I gave him a warning call, ‘Hey, watch out. They’ve got a back back there, he isn’t pretty, but he hurts people. He runs them over. He’s a fullback that can tote the ball. He gets tougher when he’s got the ball under his arm and I bet he was a (beast) in red rover, red rover. Kill the guy with the ball? He’s out there collecting his own hides. He’s fun to watch, God he is.
1) And if Rob Ryan is let go or finds another job outside of Cleveland, we will miss him as he has been a lot of fun to watch. At times even as the team struggled to keep healthy bodies on the field, Ryan’s schemes would frequently help keep the Browns in games this season. Then again, he doesn’t care what anyone thinks, let alone WFNY. That’s why we saved this last quote for last.
“I know somebody said I’m not a good game day coach. What a dumb (person.) Anyway, I’m a great game day coach. Probably the best coach. Been coaching a long time. That’s okay. It was somebody on the talk shows. I always listen to it after the game just so my kids will get (ticked) at me. They get so mad. ‘Why are you doing that dad?’ ‘I don’t know I just want to hear someone dumber than me.’"
