History, for whatever reason, has a tendency to repeat itself even when the parties involved don't intend to revive the past. The world works in mysterious ways.
Case in point: Eleven years ago, two men were hired to join the staff of a head coach who was starting his first full season with a new organization. The two men were Rob Ryan and Mike Woicik. The head coach was Bill Belichick. The team was the New England Patriots. Ryan, a defensive assistant, was assigned to oversee the linebackers. Woicik was asked to run the strength and conditioning program.
A year later, during the 2001 season, the Patriots began their run to a championship that culminated with a victory in Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans.
A decade has passed since then, but some events similar to the ones that transpired in New England in 2000 have unfolded recently in Dallas. Woicik and Ryan, who is now a defensive coordinator, have again been added to the staff of a head coach at the beginning of his tenure. In this instance, it's the Cowboys' Jason Garrett.
And that of course begs the obvious question: Could the Woicik-Ryan-first-year coach combination once again unlock the case holding the Vince Lombardi trophy? You'll have to wait until Feb. 3, 2013, to find out. In case you're wondering, that's the date of Super Bowl XLVII, which will be held in...you guessed it...New Orleans.
