Asked a general question about his new defense's depth, Rob Ryan didn't take long to mention inside linebacker Sean Lee as "really fun to watch" on film.
"He's an exciting guy," Ryan said, "and really look for him to make a huge jump this year."
Word was, Lee stopped by Valley Ranch two days after Ryan agreed to join Jason Garrett's staff and wanted to get a jump on his new defensive coordinator's scheme. Just as advertised, his work ethic is tremendous, just like the two guys ahead of him: Keith Brooking and Bradie James.
A "huge jump" might indicate a large increase in playing time, but that would probably require supplanting Brooking. Although there has been speculation about Brooking's future in Dallas, the 35-year-old has said he still thinks he would be an effective player in a 14th NFL season.
Ryan had high praise for Brooking, too, saying he plays with "his hair on fire."
James, the other starting inside linebacker and a fellow defensive captain, is scheduled to be a free agent after 2011.
Lee was drafted in the second round as an heir apparent. Doesn't mean Lee will be a starter in 2010, but if he can avoid injury it's clear Ryan thinks he can make a difference in his second year.
