Did you want to retire?
I talked it over with wife, grand-kids, and Jerry... at this particular time this is the best thing for me. I still have a lot of energy left though.
Could you be coached out of retirement?
I never say no to anything. I already had 3 phone calls for hires, but I'm still retired as of now.
Thoughts on Tyron?:
He can be the best ever to play the game. He has great skill, great reach, and speed. I believe we clocked him around 4.7-4.8 in the 40, which is incredible for an OL his size. He loves to work hard.
We played a lot of rooks/young guys (Kller, Tyron, Costa). They really played well, and hard, for me. They really put out.
Do you switch Tyron to OLT?
I don't know what they have in mind, but he's 20 when he came in w/o a minicamp and no OTA and he did an incredible job. I think he'll make an incredible OLT.
Were you disappointed in Free?
When a player is payed as much as he was, the fans expect more. But I couldn't ask any more of Free than he gave me. Can he play better? Yes, he'll play better. But, from a work ethic stand point, I couldn't ask more. he'll earn his money.
Could Free be an OG?
You take the 5 guys on your team that are the best players and you move them around to get them on the field. Flozell played guard for us, and Larry Allen played tackle. You just want to get the best 5 on the field. Even if it means moving them around.
Arkin wasn't active a single game. What happened? Is there still potential?
Oh yeah. He's going to be a really good player. We're reworking his leg strength and core strength and he'll be a tremendous player.
Young players will get a true minicamp and OTA this year, and will get a better opportunity to show what they can do this coming year.
Dickerson or Emmitt you coached them both?
If I were drafting, which would I draft? I love them both. Obviously Emmitt had a great career, and he's so durable. We all remember him playing with the shoulder injury. I'm side stepping the question, but I love them both.
I'm going to miss watching Murray and Jones. Murray averaged ~5.5 ypc and Jones ~4.5ypc. Those are really great numbers. This line is going to benefit greatly with those two running the ball.
Developing players like Tyron, Allen, ... is what I'll miss the most. But, I've got to find something else to do.
This team is on the upward trend. JG does a great job, got good QB and runners.
Should JG turn over play calling to another coach?
I think that's blown out of proportion a little bit. JG is an extremely bright guy. Any mistakes he made this year will be corrected before next year. JG stays up late every night making corrections so he'll do a great job.
